Bookmakers have suspended betting on Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino becoming the first Premier League manager to leave his job this summer after a flurry of bets on the Argentine to go.
Worryingly for Tottenham fans the last 24 hours has seen a huge gamble on Pochettino to become the first managerial casualty of the 2019/20 season.
Pochettino was a big 20/1 (+2000) outsider with Betway on Thursday to become the first Premier League manager to leave his job, but after seeing the odds tumble to 7/2 (+350) and lower Betway have decided to suspend betting on the Tottenham manager.
Betway’s Alan Alger said: "I’m not sure many saw it coming but there’s been a massive move in the past 24 hours for Mauricio Pochettino to be the first Premier League manager sacked this season.
"Despite guiding Spurs to the Champions League in all of the last four seasons, they’ve lost 44% of their matches in 2019 which have led to murmurs of player unrest and with the prospect of their bitter north London rivals to come this weekend, the Argentinian’s sack race odds have plummeted.
Traders on 'Red Alert'
"We had him as an outsider at 20/1 yesterday afternoon but that price shortened up throughout the day and then sharply dropped to 7/2 overnight.
"The magnitude of this odds shift put traders are on red alert and we’ve taken the decision to suspend betting."
Pochettino has cut a more frustrated figure this season on the Tottenham bench just three games into the new Premier League campaign with Spurs enduring a mixed start.
The Argentine has been outspoken on some of Tottenham's transfer dealings this summer and suggested in pre-season that maybe his job title should be changed from ‘manager’ to ‘coach’.
Pochettino hinted at the end of last season that he could walk away from Spurs and return to his native South America had they won the Champions League final against Liverpool.
This latest development on his future after the betting frenzy on him becoming the first manager to go is far from ideal timing with a clash with North London rivals Arsenal just 48 away and defeat to their bitter rivals will only add fuel to the fire over Pochettino's position.
