The Drone Racing League announced a multiyear partnership with Genius Sports on Wednesday in an effort to push drone racing into the U.S. sports betting landscape.

The two will be working together toward creating the first league-approved drone racing product in the U.S., enabling licensed sportsbooks to attract a new audience of drone racing fans, according to a news release.

Genius Sports has business relationships with the NBA, NASCAR and the English Premier League. It will leverage DRL's official data to build a high-end live betting product to be sold to legal sportsbooks in regulated territories around the world, the release said.

It will need approval from state regulators to be added to betting catalogs. Sports are often added and taken off betting catalogs, depending on the state.

“Fans all over the world love the Drone Racing League — and now, through our incredible new partnership with Genius Sports, they'll soon get to bet on it too,” DRL President Rachel Jacobson said in the news release. “With our minute-long races packed with stats around speed, crashes, and competition, professional drone racing is on the fast track to be the best sport to bet on.”

The announcement comes at a good time for DRL. It is airing the 2020 DRL Allianz World Championship Season on NBCSN, Twitter and Facebook, with its next race Wednesday at 7 p.m. This season, 12 elite pilots are competing in an immersive drone racing video game called DRL SIM.

It's available on Xbox and Steam for anyone to fly the same drones and same maps as the professional pilots, the release said.

Genius Sports Partnership

“The Drone Racing League is all about delivering real-time, data-driven content to highly engaged fans worldwide. Their core aims align closely with our own, making this the ideal partnership to unleash DRL's fantastic product with our global network of sportsbooks and their customers,” said Genius Sports CEO Mark Locke, whose company is based in London.

Genius Sports, a worldwide sports data and technology provider, earlier this week announced that it was going public with blank-check company dMY Technology Acquisition II in a $1.5 billion deal.

On Oct. 9, Genius Sports and PointsBet announced a deal that made PointsBet the first U.S. operator to sign on with Genius Sports’ Streaming product. PointsBet will have access to live streaming of sports events along with accompanying data from Genius Sports. It will give PointsBet customers the opportunity to wager during games.

Access to DRL's drone technology and official data across live and virtual drone races will help Genius Sports create a real-time gaming platform that provides up-to-the-second odds with "transparency, accuracy and security," the release said. It will also be able to produce a suite of wagers and prop bets.
