FanDuel Minnesota: Everything to Know About a 2023 Launch

It’s been over four and a half years since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a nationwide ban on legal sports betting, and over that time FanDuel has expanded from a daily fantasy outfit to arguably the most popular online sportsbook in America.

And Minnesota is undoubtedly on the company’s radar, should the North Star State legalize sports betting in 2023.

That’s certainly the hope, given that several Minnesota lawmakers have been working for years to build support for a measure that would legalize online Minnesota sports betting, as well as retail wagering at tribal casinos and perhaps horse racing tracks.

A potential launch in Minnesota would add to a FanDuel footprint in the Midwest that already includes Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana—and as of Jan. 1, 2023, Ohio.

Minnesota Sports Betting: Lawmakers to try again in 2023?

Pressure on legislators in the North Star State to embrace legal sports betting increased considerably in late 2021 after neighboring Wisconsin began amending its compacts with tribal leaders to allow retail sports betting in some retail tribal casinos.

As a result, the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association reconsidered its long-held stand against any expansion of gambling in the state, opening the possibility to sports betting run through tribal casinos.

Getting a sports betting bill through the Minnesota legislature, though, has proven tough sledding to say the least. Previous attempts to advance sports betting through legislation in the state have gained little traction.

An attempt to further the issue in 2022 stalled, even though the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association supported the Democratic-controlled House bill. That's because Gov. Tim Walz, who was re-elected in November, refused to consider a separate, GOP-backed bill (it would have allowed the state's two racetracks to offer retail and online sports betting, which the tribes opposed). Walz is on record that he will only support a bill that the tribes back.

But the pressure on Minnesota from other states like Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa, as well as the Canadian province of Ontario, is not going away. “We no longer can be an island,” one state senator said in 2021.

Lawmakers will assuredly make another push toward legalizing sports betting in 2023, perhaps with an eye toward launching in time for that year’s NFL season.

The legislative session runs until the middle of May. If a bill is passed in mid-May, it's feasible that a launch could happen in the second half of 2023.

And should that happen, sports bettors in Minnesota will at last discover why FanDuel has earned the status of America’s most popular sportsbook.

It would also introduce to Minnesota one of the best-known and most-used sports betting apps on the market, a platform renowned for its iPhone app, clean interface, and ease of navigation.

With more than six million registered users, FanDuel has carved for itself a defined niche at the top of the American sports wagering industry—as bettors in the North Star State will hopefully soon find out.

FanDuel Minnesota: A Paragon of User-Friendliness

Formed in Austin, Texas, during the 2009 South by Southwest Interactive festival when five friends gathered around a backyard picnic table to devise a new way to play fantasy sports, FanDuel has emerged as a favorite of sports bettors.

Its interface features competitive odds that are updated in real time, and a wide variety of markets augmented at times by live streaming of some sporting events. FanDuel accepts deposits through a variety of methods such as debit and credit cards, electronic check, wire transfers and apps like PayPal.

The minimum deposit is $5, and FanDuel Sportsbook offers users benefits such as insurance on certain multi-leg parlays, referral bonuses, odds boosts and sport-specific promos.

The platform offers a full slate of pregame, futures and live betting, and its NFL betting options are particularly thorough.

The user-friendliness of the FanDuel app is unparalleled, making it easy for even new customers to navigate the registration process, locate promotions, and find a wealth of sports on which to wager.

Withdrawals are typically processed within 48 hours, although the time it takes those funds to reach the user can depend on the cash-out method. It all makes for a very professional, polished sports betting app that’s a favorite of newcomers and serious sports bettors alike.

FanDuel Minnesota: ‘No Sweat First Bet’

When it comes to promotions, FanDuel’s typical welcome offer to new bettors is its “No Sweat First Bet,” which reimburses a lost initial wager up to $1,000 in the form of free bets.

As Minnesota sports bettors are likely to discover, the offer is incredibly competitive within the industry due to the fact that the amount has to be played through just one time before being eligible for withdrawal—compared with 25 times for some competitors.

The minimum qualifying wager to receive the offer is just $10, and once that initial lost wager is settled, free bet tokens typically arrive in a user’s account within 72 hours.

The free bets expire within 14 days, though they can be used to wager on any sporting event, and they do not carry any minimum odds. The “No Sweat First Bet” welcome offer has become such a standard at FanDuel that it doesn’t require use of a promo code.

FanDuel often offers other promotions such as $25 same-game parlay insurance—meaning you get back your stake up to that amount if one game loses—and $5 NBA wagers that can earn users a free three-month subscription to NBA League Pass.

And should FanDuel eventually launch in Minnesota, users should keep an eye out for offers like $100 in free bets to users who preregister, no deposit required.
