Liverpool have been backed into joint second favorites to sign in-demand Ajax and Netherlands star Matthijs de Ligt this summer.

The Champions League winners have been the most popular choice for bettors for De Ligt's next club with Betway cutting from their price from 12/1 (+1200) last week to 3/1 (+300) after a flurry of bets.

A potential move to Liverpool would see de Ligt join his Netherlands defensive partner Virgil van Dijk at Anfield in arguably one of the game’s strongest defences on paper.

Barcelona remain favourites to sign De Ligt this summer at 7/4 (+175) having been front-runners for his signature for several months now.

The Spanish giants have already raided Ajax to sign Frenkie de Jong for next season and they remain keen to reunite De Ligt with de Jong despite reports that the deal has stalled in recent weeks due to the price of the overall deal.

Paris Saint Germain are locked together with Liverpool at 3/1 (+300) to land de Ligt with the French champions able to blow many of their rivals out of the water when it comes down to offering the best financial deal for the defender.

Manchester United, who are in the market for a new central defender this summer to bolster their limited options, are next in the betting at 4/1 (+400) to bring de Ligt to Old Trafford, but a lack of Champions League football next season could dent United's chances of luring him to England.

Betway’s Alan Alger said: “Virgil van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt have formed a successful centre back partnership for Holland and there’s growing support in the betting for them to do it on the club scene too.

“We’ve seen a big move on Liverpool signing de Ligt over the weekend, with the 19-year-old now just 3/1 to join the European champions having been as big as 12/1 last week.”

“A non-English move looks an option too with Barcelona the 7/4 favourites to sign the Ajax defender, while PSG have also been backed into 3/1 from 6/1.

“Manchester United were 9/4 and touted as a likely destination last week, but bets on a move to Old Trafford have cooled and that move is now priced at 4/1.”

Italian champions Juventus are also admirers of De Ligt and they are a 14/1 (+1400) shot with Betway to win the race for the teenager, who scored against the Bianconeri this season to knock them out of the Champions League.

Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly tried to convince de Ligt to join him at Juventus following Portugal's 1-0 win over the Netherlands in the Nations League final last weekend, but a move to Italy remains a big outsider.

De Ligt revealed after the Nations League final he has not made up his mind about where he will be playing next season and this could be a transfer saga that could go on all summer.
