With the NBA playoffs just getting started, Bookies.com used season records, series odds, the last 15 games, net rating, offensive and defensive rating, head-to-head records between each matchup and injuries to create a grading score that ranks the most dangerous lower seeded playoff teams. Bookies.com is considering a team “dangerous” if the lower seed has a higher chance of an upset and progressing in the playoffs. We used ESPN, Basketball-Reference, NBA.com and Yahoo Sports for the data.

While the 2026 NBA postseason is still in its infancy, we’ve already seen some eye-raising results, including the Orlando Magic’s 112-101 Game 1 upset over top seed Detroit on Sunday.

Who Are The Most Dangerous Teams in This Year’s Postseason?

While Orlando’s 11-point Game 1 win in Detroit made waves, it ultimately wasn’t enough to catapult the club higher than seventh out of eight teams when it came to the club of lower seeded teams that are playing in the first round.

That’s because Orlando’s ability to beat Detroit does little change the narrative around how difficult it’ll be for the club to win a title in 2026, especially given how they’d have to face either the Cleveland Cavaliers or Toronto Raptors (who are one spot ahead of Orlando on our dangerous teams list) in the second round and most likely the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals.

There’s also the sheer fact that a Game 1 upset win doesn’t imply a change in the outlook for the Detroit-Orlando first round series, with oddsmakers from DraftKings Sportsbook still giving the Pistons the upper hand with -190 odds that the Pistons move on.

Still, Orlando’s Game 1 victory on the road over a Pistons team that showed few (if any) signs of weakness during the regular season is impressive, with all five Magic starters scoring in double figures while outrebounding Detroit, 45-39 and dishing out 26 assists to the home team’s 19.

Which NBA Teams Could Surprise in 2026?

While the lone lower seeded team to win Game 1 has already been covered, the more dangerous teams in the long run are the ones that came up a bit shy but feature the type of well-rounded star power that championship clubs usually have.

Take for instance the Houston Rockets. Hosuton lost future Hall of Famer Kevin Durant at the last minute before Game 1 because of a knee injury but still managed to give the Lakers hell for much of Game 1 before ultimately falling, 107-98.

Given our assumption that KD will be back in the lineup come Game 2 on Tuesday night, we’re giving Houston the best danger score of any lower seeded team this postseason, with 9 out of 10 points.

Getting Durant back in the flow of things will likely help Houston’s offense, which shot an ice-cold 38% from the field and 33% from behind the arc in Game 1, with four starters finishing in double figures but none doing so on better than 50% shooting from the floor.

Based on the 2026 NBA Finals odds on FanDuel Sportsbook, it seems like operators agree with our assessment, as Houston’s current +12500 odds of reaching the championship series are the best of any team that lost in Game 1, while ranking alongside the squad that they lost to in the 16-team field.

Who Else Could Make Some Noise?

Outside of the Space City, our most dangerous teams that are the lower seeded ones in the first round include the Minnesota Timberwolves (8/10 danger score), Atlanta Hawks and Portland Trail Blazers (7/10 danger score each) and the Philadelphia 76ers (6/10 danger score).

Of those four, Minnesota and Atlanta managed to lose by the smallest margins, with both teams falling by 11 points apiece to the Denver Nuggets (116-105) and New York Knicks (113-102) in their respective openers.

Portland (111-98 loss to the San Antonio Spurs) and Philly (123-91 loss to the Boston Celtics) did not fare nearly as well out of the gate, though the Trail Blazers have one of the league’s hottest shooters right now in Deni Avdija, who has scored 30 or more points in three of the team’s last five games, including a team-high 30 in Game 1 against the Spurs.

For the Sixers, the absence of big man Joel Embiid, who is still out with an abdomen injury, was noticeable in Game 1, with Boston bullying Philly in transition (with 20 fast break points to Philly’s 10) and pulling down 43 boards to the Sixers’ 40 (including a defensive rebounding advantage of 38-to-29), helping the C’s crush their rivals from the City of Brotherly Love by 31 points in Game 1.

Still, with ample star power from players like Tyrese Maxey (who leads Philly in scoring this year, at 28.3 points per game) and veteran Paul George, there’s reason to believe that the Sixers could still threaten Boston and any other team they play this postseason, which why we’re giving them a danger score of 6/10 this year.

Interestingly, of the teams currently in a 1-0 series hole, the Sixers have the sixth best odds of coming back on Caesars Sportsbook, at +1000, with Philly ranking behind the Rockets (-230), Pistons (-210), Hawks (+345), Timberwolves (+425) and Raptors (+650).

Still, there’s plenty of basketball still to be played across the NBA, with each of the teams on the wrong end of a Game 1 loss having an opportunity to flip the script when they get back on the court in their respective second games of the conference quarterfinal round.
