The Atlanta Falcons hit the reset button on Jan. 4, firing coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot just hours after a 19-17 win over the Saints closed out another lost season. Our Next Atlanta Falcons Head Coach Odds offer insight into who will be the team’s next head coach.

The Falcons are nearing a hire for someone to oversee all or part of their football operation – namely former QB Matt Ryan.

The moves came after Atlanta finished 8-9 for the second straight year under Morris and extended its playoff drought to eight consecutive seasons. Morris, who finished 16-18 across two seasons, said postgame he expected to return for a third year. Instead, ownership opted for a full overhaul. Those failures came despite the Falcons signing Kirk Cousins, taking QB Michael Penix Jr. high the 2024 NFL Draft, and loading up on offensive talent elsewhere in the draft and free agency.

Expect the new coach to have an offensive background and focus.

Breaking Down The Top Falcons Head Coach Candidates

Ex-Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski spiked to the top of this market after getting the boot from Cleveland. Like the top contenders here and elsewhere, he brings an offensive mindset to a team that continues to whiff on that side of the ball.

Meanwhile, former Ravens coach John Harbaugh, fired Tuesday after 18 years with the Ravens were eliminated, remains a long-shot for this job.

Seattle OC Klint Kubiak will enter the offseason as the most-coveted coordinator in the NFL. In addition to talk of him nesting with the Falcons, his name has related to potential head coaching spots in Las Vegas and Baltimore. Under Kubiak, journeyman QB Sam Darnold continued his winning ways in the Great Northwest. The Seahawks on Saturday clinched the NFC West and No. 1 seed in the NFC. Kubiak eared his reputation by creating adaptable offensive schemes and for working under successful head coaches Kyle Shanahan and Mike Macdonald.

Rams OC Mike LaFleur served as Ryan’s QB coach under then-OC Shanahan in 2015 and 2016. Ryan earned MVP honors under LaFleur’s tutelage, and held a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl 51.

Former Cowboys and Packers head coach Mike McCarthy could fit well into owner Arthur Blank’s wheelhouse. Blank leaned toward hiring Bill Belichick previously. Patriots owner Robert Kraft and his own front office swayed Blank otherwise. Blank may want a proven, veteran head coach, albeit here with an offensive background. McCarthy fills that application perfectly.

Kliff Kingsbury, the OC for the Commanders until Washington fired him this week, has NFL head coaching experience. His coaching record remains suspect. Kingsbury aided the development of both Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City and Kyler Murray in Arizona.

Falcons Appeared To Be On Course

The timing of the firings was notable. Atlanta closed the season on a four-game winning streak and finished in a three-way 8-9 tie atop the NFC South. The late surge came only after the Falcons' playoff elimination. Carolina claimed the division based on a superior divisional record.

Blank attended Morris’ postgame news conference Sunday and embraced the coach afterward. Less than two hours later, Morris no longer had the job.

Fontenot, hired ahead of the 2021 season, went 36-48 as GM. His tenure did produce recent bright spots, particularly in the 2025 draft. First-rounders James Peace Jr. and Jalon Walker led all rookies in sacks, while third-round pick Xavier Watts topped the rookie class with five interceptions.

Players publicly backed Morris in the aftermath. Guard Chris Lindstrom praised the team’s culture and late-season resolve, while wide receiver Drake London called any coaching decisions “above my pay grade.”

Move Was In Works During Season

Behind the scenes, Blank had already begun evaluating the franchise. The Falcons recently hired consulting firm Sportsology to study the organization and will now begin parallel searches for a new head coach and general manager. ZRG Partners will assist with the coaching search, while Sportsology will help identify the next GM. No timeline has been set.

Morris previously served as Atlanta’s interim coach in 2020, going 4-7 after Dan Quinn was fired. He was hired full-time in 2024 after serving as defensive coordinator with the Rams, with Blank expressing confidence the Falcons were ready to win.

Instead, Atlanta is back at the window — again — looking for leadership that can finally turn promise into playoff tickets.
