Next LSU Coach Odds: Kiffin In Line To Replace Kelly?

The drama in college football is not always tied to what happens on the field. That’s been evident as some schools fire their coaches – like LSU with Brian Kelly – and others, reportedly, want to know if their coaches will be staying put.
Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin earlier this week denied published reports that his school has given a Nov. 28 deadline to decide whether he will stay in Oxford to coach the Rebels or move on to another job. Kiffin has been tied to both the LSU and Florida openings.

Who Replaces Brian Kelly at LSU?
Kiffin remains the favorite, but another SEC coach, Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz, has emerged as the new second choice. Drinkwitz’s odds have shortened from +1150 last month to +525.
Louisville coach Jeff Brohm’s odds, meanwhile, have nearly doubled as his Cardinals have suffered back-to-back home losses that ended their chances for an ACC title and College Football Playoff berth. There have also been rumors that Brohm, who has also been mentioned for the Penn State opening, is negotiating with Louisville officials for an extension to stay at his alma mater.
James Franklin is no longer under consideration as the former Penn State and Vanderbilt coach took the Virginia Tech job earlier this week.
Drama in the Bayou
The Kiffin drama is just the latest turn in the saga down in Baton Rouge. It’s not just Kelly who has departed. Scott Woodward was also let go as the school’s athletic director. That move came shortly after Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry made it clear Woodward would not be involved in the selection process.
It remains to be seen how that will affect the search, but a high-profile job like the LSU head football coach will attract big names no matter who does the hiring.
While Kiffin and Drinkwitz are the top two choices on our board, other potential candidates have ties to either the program or the state.
Jon Sumrall, Tulane’s coach and a previous assistant at Ole Miss and Kentucky, has the same odds as Brohm. Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, who served as the passing game coordinator for LSU’s 2019 national championship squad, is next in line.
USC coach Lincoln Riley and former Tigers coach Nick Saban also make our board, but both are considered significant longshots to stay or return.

Time Running Out
LSU will want to find its next head coach as soon as possible because there are a couple of key events happening right after the regular season ends.
College football’s early signing period begins on Dec. 3, and the Tigers, who currently have the 12th-best recruiting class in the country according to 247Sports.com, will want to make sure players committed to LSU come on board.
In addition, once the college football regular season concludes, many players will announce their intention to enter the transfer portal. Like it or loathe it, recruiting veteran players from the portal is a great way for a new coach to build a team that can compete for an SEC title immediately.
If LSU manages its search like Les Miles managed late-game situations, then the Tigers could be in for trouble next season.
