Ohio Moves To Ban Sports Betting Credit Card Deposits, Joining Multiple States & Operators

Ohio sports betting regulators have moved to ban credit card deposits to fund wagering accounts. A proposed rule ending the use of credit-card deposits remains open for public review until May 15. Multiple operators have halted the use of credit cards to fund sports betting accounts in the past year, including Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel, bet365, and BetMGM. Those sports betting operators have been joined in 2026 by states such as Maine and Virginia.
In 2023, Ohio sports betting launched. The Buckeye State consistently ranks among the top in the nation when it comes to betting handle. Once the public comment period ends, the Ohio Casino Control Commission will be free to enact the change.

Credit Card Deposit Scoreboard
Here’s a breakdown of where the major sports betting operators and prediction markets stand about credit card-funded deposits or trades:

Multiple States Ban Credit Card Deposits
Massachusetts banned credit card-funded bets when it passed legal sports betting in 2022. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission hit Boston-based DraftKings with multiple fines totaling $450,000 during its first two years of operation there. On multiple occasions, the operator allowed wagers funded by credit card deposits in other states to be placed in the Commonwealth.
Those fines, and the prevailing negative sentiment and media backlash against legalized sports betting pushed operators in to removing credit cards from their payment pages.
Among the other states that don’t allow credit-card funded deposits: Iowa, Maine, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Vermont. Meanwhile, the Commonwealth of Virginia pulled the plug on credit-card deposits on April 13, the same day bet365 did the same.
In addition to Ohio, legislators in Colorado, Maryland, New Jersey and New York continue to weigh credit card bans.
Move To Cut Credit Cards Comes Amid Larger Backlash
The move to pare the use of credit cards by operators comes amid a pushback against legalized sports betting in several states. Legislators in Ohio are considering a bill that would drastically curb online sports betting.
The “Save Ohio Sports Act” proposed last month included a ban on credit card-funded wagers. In addition, it would:
- Ban all mobile wagering
- Bans on all prop, parlay, and live-action betting
- Limit wagers to $100 per bet per person
Another Ohio bill would add a 2% fee to all wagers to help fund publicly owned sports facilities and school athletics.
Prediction Markets, Sportsbooks Break On Credit Card Use
Prediction markets, meanwhile, continue to allow credit cards to fund trades, in certain circumstances. Kalshi allows credit cards to fund accounts for traders over 21. Polymarket accepts USD Coin and other crypto methods of payment funded by credit cards.
Novig currently operates on a dual-currency model and allows credit card funding on all deposits. The company filed for certification with the CFTC but has yet to be given clearance to operate as a Designated Contract Market. It plans to drop its dual-currency model once it gets federal approval.
