Robert Thomas has emerged as one of the NHL trade deadline’s most fascinating names. The latest reporting suggests there is a real chance St. Louis moves him, but any deal would still need to clear two major hurdles: a massive asking price from the Blues and Thomas’ own full no-trade clause.

Utah is the clearest team in the mix right now, while several center-needy clubs could try to position themselves if Doug Armstrong decides to pull the trigger. With that in mind, Bookies.com compiled hypothetical next team odds for the St. Louis center.

Where Will Robert Thomas Go Next?

Given that Thomas is currently in the middle of an eight year contract worth $65 million in total (running through the 2030-31 league year), it might be a tall task for Armstrong to move the former first round pick ahead of Friday’s deadline.

With Thomas’ immense contract commitments, it makes sense that our top team (the Utah Mammoth, at +350) is a team with positive salary cap space, with the Western Conference franchise currently holding $6.25 million in cap space, per the team at puckpedia.com.

The same can be said of the Philadelphia Flyers, who are second on our Thomas odds board at +600, with the club holding $6.86 million in cap space (ranking sixth leaguewide), while the New York Islanders (+700) are currently in the negative, at -$3.22 million.

Throw in the Montreal Canadiens (+800) and Boston Bruins (+1000) and you have Thomas’ trade market odds covered, with the ‘Habs currently holding $326K in salary cap space, while the Bruins have slightly greater cap room, at $1.10 million.

What Robert Thomas Adds

Given Thomas’ on-ice value, with 3.5 point shares (per hockey-reference.com) in 43 games played and 40.6 point shares overall across his 509-game NHL career, it seems like a safe bet to assume that there will be a market for his services should the Blues opt to make a move this week.

One thing that’s interesting about Thomas’ game at the center position is his value on both ends of the ice, with positive point share totals on offense and defense in each of his eight seasons with the Blues, including a career high value of 8.6 win shares (6.0 offensive and 2.6 defensive) during this 2023-24 league year.

Given that Utah’s currently in possession of the top wild card slot in the West, with the Blues sitting second-to-last, it seems like a ‘now or never’ moment for the second-year club.

Add in the impetus to bring playoff hockey to the Beehive State for the first time in 2026, it could make sense for Utah GM Bill Armstrong to push his chips in and make a splash deal this week.

If such calculus becomes reality in Salt Lake City, then the Mammoth would be wise to make a deal for Thomas, as the 26-year-old center is likely to be among the top trade targets this season.
