Top 10 Trash-Talking NFL Franchises: Which Teams and Fans Run Their Mouths the Most?

The NFL isn’t just about blocking, tackling, throwing, running, kicking, and catching.
There’s a much more nuanced part of the game that often gets missed—or censored—during telecasts: Trash talk.
Since the 1970 merger with the AFL, the NFL has seen its fair share of legendary trash talkers. From Randy Moss and Terrell Owens to Tom Brady and Richard Sherman, some of the sport’s greatest stars have never shied away from running their mouths.
And that attitude has carried over into their fan bases.
New Englanders rode a wave of 13 championships across the NFL, MLB, NHL, and NBA in the first 24 years of the new century—thanks in large part to Brady—and they never shut up about it.
But the Patriots haven’t won a playoff game since January 2019. Foxboro and the surrounding region have been on radio silence ever since.

The Steel Curtain Shows Its Mettle
The Pittsburgh Steelers have given their fans plenty of reason to talk trash over the past half-century. They dominated the 1970s, winning four Super Bowls in six years starting with Super Bowl IX in 1975.
In total, Pittsburgh boasts six Lombardi Trophies, 22 division titles, 30 playoff appearances, and an impressive 480–305–2 (.635) record since the 1970 merger. The Steelers have made the playoffs 16 times in the 21st century—but haven’t won a postseason game since the 2016 season.
With Aaron Rodgers now in Pittsburgh, expect a deep reservoir of trash talk to be directed at Steelers fans. But rest assured, they’ll give it right back.
Buffalo’s No. 2 ranking may come as a surprise. The Bills have dominated the AFC East since Tom Brady bolted New England for Tampa Bay in 2020, winning the division five straight times. That gave Bills fans plenty of ammunition to fire back at the New Englanders who tormented them for two and a half decades.
Still, Josh Allen and the Bills have been bounced from the playoffs four times—each time by Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
And while Kansas City fans have plenty to brag about—three Super Bowl wins and four AFC championships in five years—they somehow underperformed on our list.
Go figure. When you’re on top, sometimes the trophy does the talking.
