Yankees Odds for World Series Strong Despite Injury Issues

Another day, another New York Yankees player has succumbed to injury.
The latest are infielders D.J. LeMahieu, who is dealing with a deep bruise in his right knee, and Gio Urshela. While the Yankees continue to be sapped by injuries, the team continues to find ways to win with a makeshift roster.
They’ve won 11 of their past 13 games to improve to 17-11, which ties them for the second-best record in the American League, and 888Sport has them tied with the second-best MLB betting odds to win the World Series at +600.
Yankees Have 13 Players on Disabled List
The Yankees already have 13 players on the injured list, which leads the majors. The team is missing more than half of their Opening Day roster. On Sunday, after LeMahieu and Urshela were forced from the game, the Yankees looked like a Triple-A team with Tyler Wade at third base and Thairo Estrada at second.
The good news for manager Aron Boone’s team is that it is starting to get some bodies back. Catcher Gary Sanchez has only played 15 games this season but already has eight home runs.
Meanwhile, third-baseman Miguel Andujar could return by next weekend.
One thing that’s really helped the Yankees stay afloat is their schedule. To date, they’ve only faced one team with a winning record: the Houston Astros. That’ll change quickly, though, as their next four series (and 12 games) are against teams that are currently above .500.
What’s also helped is that they continue to get quality pitching. The Yankees are second in the majors in run differential; their pitching staff has posted a 3.90 ERA (ninth in the MLB) and held opposing batters to a .228 batting average (sixth-best).
Even with a lineup that’s been held together with duct tape and glue, the Yankees have somehow pumped out the fifth-most home runs – 46 through Monday – with six different players hitting at least five dingers.
Dodgers Tied with Yankees At +600 Odds
While the Yankees have impressed despite all of the injuries, the Dodgers have impressed in their own way. Deemed to be a team that lacked hitting in the preseason, nobody would make that assessment at this point. The Dodgers have crushed 49 home runs in 31 games (fourth-best in the majors) and are fifth in OPS.
Much of that has to do with Cody Bellinger, who has put up record-setting numbers in April. His 14 home runs ties Alex Rodriguez (2007) and Albert Pujols (2006) for the most by a player before May 1.
Given what we know about their pitching staff and what they’re capable of, this team looks like the most complete contender in the National League.

Astros Still Favored to Win Series
Meanwhile, the Houston Astros are still the World Series betting favorite at +450 at 888Sport. There’s hardly a weakness on the roster as every position group outside of first base has a bWAR that’s 11th or better. Their pitching staff has held opponents to a .206 batting average – the best in the MLB – while their own lineup leads the AL in hitting at .267.
There’s still a long way to go but the oddsmakers view them as the team to beat.
