After dominating offenses for the first three weeks of the season, the Carolina Panthers were shredded in last week’s loss to the Cowboys. The Philadelphia Eagles just couldn’t keep up with the Chiefs, finding new and creative ways to take points off the board. Both teams scored a lot of points in losing efforts, and sportsbooks are expecting a little regression with this week’s total.

Much of NFL betting is trying to get ahead of the pendulum, and the total reflects a lower-scoring game.

Sam Darnold has been a pleasant surprise for the Panthers with TDs now coming on the ground. Jalen Hurts will also present a difficult matchup with his ability to stretch the field with both arm and leg. Neither defense has faced a dual-threat QB so far like they will Sunday afternoon. There’s also a good chance we see the return of Christian McCaffrey.

The Panthers are a 3.5-point home favorite against the Eagles. This is one of the shorter NFL spreads on the slate, especially with the Eagles losing record. Carolina is -180 on the ML, while the Eagles are a +160 underdog. The total is 45 points despite both teams putting up at least 28 points last week.

Panthers vs. Eagles Key Matchups

Panthers D vs. Jalen Hurts: Hurts threw for 387 yards and 2 TDs last week and continues to be his team’s leading rusher. This is the biggest test for this unit so far this season.

DJ Moore vs. Darius Slay: Although Slay didn’t see much action on Tyreek Hill last week, he’s expected to cover Moore this Sunday. Moore has been electric and goes against an Eagles defense that was torched two straight weeks in the air.

Panthers RBs vs. Eagles D: One of the most prolific running backs in the league returns against a run defense that gave up over 100 yards on 7 YPC to Clyde Edwards-Helaire. This should be a huge factor when making our NFL picks, as we see a trend developing.

Panthers vs. Eagles Key Stats

2: Big injuries for the Panthers with guys who stand a good chance of missing this game. McCaffrey is testing the hamstring this week and remains totally up in the air. Shaq Thompson looks like he may miss time with a foot injury.

13: Carries Chuba Hubbard got last week in Dallas. If McCaffrey is out, Hubbard stands a good chance of victimizing the Eagles defense.

15: Total touches for Miles Sanders over the past two games. Sanders might once again see limited opportunities against the Panthers defense.

56.5: Jalen Hurts’ average rushing yards per game through the first month. Hurts is the team’s leading rusher by design.

6: DJ Moore catches of over 25 yards this year. The Eagles gave up 40+ points in back-to-back weeks, and Moore could be up for a huge day.

Panthers vs. Eagles Player Props To Back

Jalen Hurts over 240.5 Pass Yards

Odds: -110 at DraftKings

It’s a low number because of the Panthers defense, but not adjusted after how bad Carolina looked last week. Hurts is going to throw – a lot - and the Eagles have some fast guys on the outside.

DeVonta Smith, Over 22.5 yards Longest Reception

Odds: -110 at DraftKings

Smith stands a way better chance of one of his grabs going for 23+ yards than him going over the total receiving yards of 60.5. The Eagles will certainly try and work Smith down field.

Kenneth Gainwell Anytime TD

Odds: -110 at FanDuel

Gainwell isn’t going anywhere but up in the Eagles’ offense. While Miles Sanders stock drops, Gainwell is a threat to score on the ground or air every week.

Panthers vs. Eagles Moneyline

This is far from a runaway, according to most betting sites, as we see a short home favorite in Carolina. It’s in an interesting spot where the single bet for Carolina isn’t too heavy to avoid, nor is the value too low on Philadelphia to pass.

Philadelphia doesn’t want to get in a shootout, but do the Panthers? The edge goes to Carolina’s defense. If you’re brave enough to face the hook then lay the points, but Carolina ML at BetMGM is the right play.

Panthers vs. Eagles Spread

Carolina’s first loss of the season came against the best talent it faced on offense. Dak Prescott isn’t “Jalen Hurts” mobile, so this presents another issue for the Panthers.

The problem for the Eagles is twofold, and both are enough to push me away from the hook. First, they are league-leading in penalties. The mental mistakes took three scores off the board against the Chiefs. Second, their defense is atrocious and makes anyone look impressive on the ground. Bet the Panthers -3.5 at WynnBET.

Panthers vs. Eagles Total 45

The general belief here is that both teams will regress a little back to the middle, or at least from scoring a ton of points last weekend. That may be true, but the total is too low to reflect a couple of more likely scenarios.

The Panthers will most likely not have McCaffrey, and therefore not interested in a ball control offense. The Eagles can’t stop anyone on the ground and leave themselves open to big plays. They also have the potential for their own deep shots with plenty of speed at the WR position. Take the Over at DraftKings.
