In five full seasons as starting running back for the Cincinnati Bengals, Joe Mixon has managed over 1,000 yards in four of them. That includes his Pro Bowl season of 2021 when he gained 1,2015 yards with 13 TDs.

But the Bengals are moving on from Mixon, releasing him to save roughly $6 million in salary cap space. They've already signed Zack Moss from the Colts to take his spot on the depth chart.

Mixon has played in at least 14 games in six of his seven seasons in Cincy, including all 17 in 2023. He gained 1,034 yards with nine TDs. He hasn't fumbled the ball in two years and is a consistent threat in the pass game too. That said, his 4.0 yards-per-carry average ranked 27th. He’s also near the bottom of the league in missed tackles per attempt and explosive plays.

Rumors were strong last off-season that Mixon would be a cap casualty, but he stayed on the squad and was the RB1 to the end. Mixon himself refuted this year’s rumors on X, deeming it “clown behavior.”

But now it appears it's happening. Mixon is being released by the Bengals, with the Bengals nearly $50 million over the cap as the off-season begins, it doesn’t appear to be a must-cut type of mood.

There aren’t many teams desperate in the search for a high-paid RB, and many of them locked in their backs during a frenzied first day of contact on March 11. Saquon Barkley is going to the Eagles, Josh Jacobs to the Packers, D'Andre Swift to the Bears, Tony Pollard to the Titans.

But Mixon isn't far behind those counterparts in production, and he could be the cheapest. He was willing to take a pay cut to stick around for 2023 and play for a title-contending team. If he lowers his financial expectations below some of those other available RBs, Mixon could fit in well in certain situations.

That boosts the chances for teams in need of a RB but without the funds to pay the top players available. The Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs each seek RB depth, and each isn't in a great spot from a salary cap standpoint.

The Cowboys were the only NFL team to not make a free agent signing on Day 1. They only have just under $9 million in cap space, but RB is one of the team's higher priorities, especially with Pollard officially gone.

The Chiefs have under $2 million in cap space after signing DL Chris Jones to a record-setting contract, so other moves would need to be made, and RB isn't the biggest priority.

The Baltimore Ravens have already lost Gus Edwards and JK Dobbins is a free agent. The Ravens reportedly are eyeing Henry, but if that falls through, Mixon is a worthy No. 2 option. Baltimore is only $2.6 million over the cap, so Mixon might be an easier fit in that regard.

Similarly, the Las Vegas Raiders lost Jacobs but have under $3 million in cap space. The team sounds content with Zamir White.

The one team with money that could still be looking for RB help is the Houston Texans. They have over $50 million left to spend as of March 12 and lost Devin Singletary to free agency. Top back Dameon Pierce managed just 2.9 yards per carry in 2023. The Texans could be looking at Henry and can afford him, but again, Mixon may be the better fit, in the pass game and financially.
