Robert Saleh was the first NFL head coach to be fired this season.

He won't be the last.

But there are several teams whose coaches may find themselves in employment peril if their teams do not reverse their plight after early-season struggles.

Eight NFL teams began the 2024 season with new coaches when compared to the start of the 2023 season. The Patriots “mutually agreed to part ways” with Bill Belichick this past January after 24 seasons and replaced him with first-year coach Jerod Mayo. The other seven spots were opened up when coaches were outright fired.

The New York Jets fired Saleh on October 7 after the Jets fell to 2-3. He was caught in a web of intrigue between Aaron Rodgers and owner Woody Johnson. Elsewhere, there's just a lot of poor coaching and poor-performing teams. Saleh was followed by Dennis Allen, who was dismissed by the Saints last week.

So who's next to lose his head coaching job in the NFL?

Let’s take a look.

Familiar Names Top List In 2024

Among the coaches expected to feel the heat during 2024 season are some familiar names from last season’s NFL futures list. Here's a breakdown of some names to watch.

Doug Pederson, Jaguars (+175)

Buzz: Doug Pederson soared to the top of this market after the Jaguars got wrecked 52-6 by the Detroit Lions Sunday. His number this week is the highest of any coach this season. It certainly looked as if his players quit on him in that loss. The 2-9 Jaguars have continued to underperform against expectations. Going back to last December, the Jaguars are 3-14 in their past 17 games. That's simply unsustainable for any head coach.

Brian Daboll, Giants (+300)

Buzz: Giants coach Brian Daboll led the “NFL First Head Coach Fired” in 2024 market for 3 weeks and he's back this week. His price has risen from +625 to +250 in a month - but he did outlast Dennis Allen (who was fired by the Saints last week). Giants ownership has publicly backed Daboll for next year. That won't mean much if the Giants finish in last place in the NFC East. Big Blue opted to run it back one more time with Daniel Jones. That failed and Jones was benched perhaps for the last time this week in favor of Tommy Cutlets (DeVito). Daboll was under fire late last season as the Giants churned through QBs. Only Pederson keeps him out of the top spot here.

Kevin Stefanski, Browns (+350)

Buzz: Kevin Stefanski and the Browns have lost 5 of 6. Jameis Winston was brought in to save the day and deliver an upset win over the Ravens by throwing for 334 yards and 3 TDs. But the Browns were subsequently blown out at New Orleans. Stefanski's price tightened significantly this week after the loss. Deshaun Watson was knocked out for the season with a ruptured Achilles in the Brown's Week 7 loss to the Bengals. His contract has become the worst in football. But dumping him would incur a $90 million cap hit. Stefanski could still end up being the fall guy in Cleveland.

Matt Eberflus, Bears (+450)

Buzz: Matt Eberflus and the Bears were enjoying a stellar rookie season from Caleb Williams and riding a defense that had the Bears square in the middle of the NFC playoff discussion. Then, it all fell apart with one second to play at Washington. That loss landed Eberflus on our list. The Bears, their players, and their fans may or may not recover from Jayden Daniels' spectacular last-second "Hail Mary." Chicago hasn't won since. They lost to Green Bay on a blocked field goal attempt. That's unacceptable. Last week, Eberflus threw OC Shane Waldron under the "L."  He's out of scapegoats.

Zac Taylor, Bengals (+800)

Buzz: Cincinnati is now 4-7 and its playoff chances have all but officially evaporated.  Hopes were high along the Ohio River before the season. Zac Taylor has lost whatever touch he may have had with QB Joe Burrow

Mike McCarthy, Cowboys (+1500)

Buzz: The best job security Mike McCarthy has these days is a cantankerous Jerry Jones. The more Jones is asked about his coach, the more defensive and angry he gets. He flat-out said this week he was not going to fire McCarthy this season. Good for McCarthy. Dallas hasn't won at home this season. The Cowboys keep losing to the best teams in the NFC. They were fed to the Lions 47-9, sputtered in a 30-24 loss at San Francisco in Week 8 after the bye,. got whacked 34-6 by the Eagles and 34-10 to the Texans. Bill Belichick's crooning across multiple media platforms further inflames the situation with each Dallas loss.
