Tom Brady’s decision to leave the New England Patriots after 20 seasons rattled betting NFL team futures markets – most notably that of the Patriots. On Friday, Brady announced on his Instagram account that he had signed a two-year deal to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent.

The NFL calendar continues unabated throughout the coronavirus pandemic, although teams have restricted travel and on-site visits. The season remains scheduled to begin on Sept. 10.

Patriots fans mourned Brady’s exit and ponder a future without the quarterback who won six Super Bowls and appeared in three others. NFL betting experts and sportsbooks, meanwhile, looked to the future.

New England Patriots Odds

The Patriots odds to win Super Bowl 55 tumbled across various markets. At PointsBet, the Patriots slipped from +1500 to +2000 in Super Bowl betting after Brady announced his exit from Foxboro. New England’s odds for a seventh Super Bowl fell to +1800 at FanDuel, down from +1700 earlier in the day. The Patriots stand at +1400 on the board at DraftKings and 888sport. They are +2000 at William Hill.

The Patriots have won the AFC East every season since 2009. New England appeared in each AFC Championship game from January 2011 until this past conference title showdown between Kansas City and Tennessee.

Odds for New England to repeat – again – in the AFC East have finally returned to earth. At PointsBet, the Patriots are even with the Bills at +125, while the Jets are +500 and the Dolphins remain the distant choice at +1200. The Patriots are still a strong favorite at -180 to win the AFC East at William Hill, while the Bills are tempting at +220. Bet365 has the Patriots at -110 to win the division, while the Bills are +225.

Patriots Quarterbacks Remaining

The remaining quarterbacks on the Patriots roster are Jarrett Stidham and Cody Kessler. The team has roughly $7.8 million in cap space. The Patriots and Bill Belichick are infamous for finding cap space when necessary by renegotiating contracts and/or moving players. Among the notable potential new QBs in New England: Andy Dalton.

Belichick chose Stidham, 23, in the fourth round of the 2019 draft. Stidham played one season at Baylor and two for Auburn.

Stidham’s NFL career has been less-than-impressive. During a Week 3 appearance against the Jets, he came in for Brady in the fourth quarter. Stidham completed 2 of 3 passes. But his pick 6 to safety Jamal Adams proved costly to Patriots bettors. The Patriots were 22.5-point favorites. But Adams’ TD gave the Jets a backdoor cover in a 30-14 loss.
