4 Nations Face-Off Round-Robin

The round-robin format will see each team play each other one time, meaning each county plays three games in the round-robin portion of the tournament, with the top two teams by points advancing to the final. The third- and fourth-place squads will not play a fourth and final game.

When looking at the round-robin, there are going to be a lot of opportunities to place bets, as you can bet on moneylines, spreads, totals, player props, and much more. We recommend waiting until the day of the game to bet on the round-robin games so you can see what the lineups are for the games when factoring in injuries, and you can know the starting goalies.

Right now, taking a look at the round-robin odds ahead of the tournament start, Canada is favored in all three of their round-robin games, USA is favored in two of their three round-robin games, Sweden is favored in one game, and Finland isn’t favored at all. This mostly mirrors the team's future odds, although there is one small discrepancy. That’s the Canada vs. USA round-robin game, where Canada is a small -125 favorite over the USA +105 despite them both being co-favored to win the tournament at +160 odds. The difference is likely because this game is taking place at Bell Centre in Montreal, but despite the fans cheering for Canada, the USA could have value at dog odds. Canada and the USA are the best teams in the tournament, but the USA has the better goaltending, so this is a bet I am looking at, given they are the underdogs.

4 Nations Face-Off Tournament Winner

I’m Canadian, so I hope I don’t get my passport revoked, but I am leaning towards the USA +160 winning the 4 Nations Face-Off. Overall, I view the USA as the deepest team with the best combination of forwards, defense, and goaltending. The goalies, especially, are where I feel the USA holds the biggest advantage in this tournament. Connor Hellebuyck is the best goalie in the world and will start for the USA, giving them a huge edge over every other team in the league. If for some reason Hellebuyck falters or gets hurt, they have Jake Oettinger and Jeremy Swayman to step in, so this team has stacked goaltending, and it should be a huge weapon.

Of course, Canada +160 still has a very good chance to win the tournament, and the reason is the team arguably has the best crop of forwards, plus a stacked defense. The problem is that the goaltending is weak this year, which could come back to haunt the team in a short tournament. But if Canada can score more goals than everyone else, they may be able to overcome having what is likely the weakest crop of goalies in the field. Unfortunately, I believe Canada's management chose the wrong goalies, and it is going to end up costing them in the end.

We can’t discount Sweden +400 and Finland +900, either. Sweden has an extremely talented team that has superstars up and down the lineup, plus solid goaltending, and Finland has several game-breakers that could see them emerge as a dark horse in a short tournament. Ultimately, I think Sweden has the better chance of the two underdogs, but given the potential variance in a very short tournament, you shouldn’t completely write Finland out of the field.

4 Nations Face-Off Tournament MVP

When it comes to the tournament MVP, we can assume the winner of the award will come from the winning team unless someone is so far ahead in points that you can’t ignore them.

Since I am leaning towards the USA to win, the two players who have the best odds are Connor Hellebuyck +1200 and Auston Matthews +1200. Matthews is the USA’s captain and is the NHL’s premier goalscorer despite having a down year due to injuries, so if the USA does win the tournament, there is a good chance Matthews will be named the tournament MVP.

However, I am leaning toward Hellebuyck getting the tournament MVP award. I think this tournament is going to be competitive, and I believe it will come down to the goaltending. Hellebuyck is the best goalie in the league right now and is having an amazing season. If the USA ends up winning the tournament, I think there’s a good chance Hellebuyck is the MVP.

Taking a look at the other countries, if Canada wins, Connor McDavid +700, Nathan MacKinnon, and Sidney Crosby +3000 could all be in the running for tournament MVP. If Sweden wins, the tournament MVP could be William Nylander +3000, and if Finland wins, look for Mikko Rantanen +4000 to be in the running for tournament MVP, as both men are elite goal scorers. You also have to consider Finland’s goalie Juuse Saros +5000, Canada’s goalie Adin Hill +7500, and Sweden's goalie Linus Ullmark +7500. In a short tournament, goalies have the chance to steal games, which could give them a heads-up when it comes to the MVP award.

Regardless of who wins this special 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, it should be a fun two weeks of hockey and a nice change of pace from the All-Star Game. Best of luck with your bets, and let’s hope for an awesome hockey tournament with tons of great action!
