The Dallas Cowboys and Mike McCarthy parted ways on Monday. McCarthy's contract was up on Tuesday but the team let it be known they were moving on to the head coaching position.

The Cowboys were among the biggest flops this past NFL season.

Yes, one could have written that line any time since 1995.

But this year’s version of the Cowboys has delivered a unique mix of dysfunction, disappointment, and despair. Yet, McCarthy kept his job throughout the season.

Each time his fate was raised with owner Jerry Jones, his place as Cowboys’ head coach grew more secure.

Last week, the Cowboys initially declined permission from other teams to speak with McCarthy last week. He is now free to search elsewhere after the sides could not reach a deal.

Let's take a look at who might be coaching the Cowboys in 2025.

Dallas Cowboys 2025 Head Coach: Names To Watch & Why

Dallas Cowboys 2025 Head Coach Odds: Who Will Replace Mike McCarthy? 1

Among the coaches who may end up in Dallas next season are several well-known names, and some others who are not. Here's a breakdown of some of the names here:

Joe Brady +500

Buzz: Bills OC Joe Brady doesn’t harbor any delusions of wanting to play GM, or butt heads with Jones. A plus for any candidate here. The last Bills OC who moved on to a head coaching job was Brian Daboll. On paper, the NFL nerds drool over the possibility of an offensive guru line Brady being given the keys to Dak Prescott (or maybe the likes of Shedeur Sanders) and the offensive skill players under contract to the Cowboys.

Deion Sanders +600

Buzz: Coach Prime won a Super Bowl ring playing for the Cowboys. He’s excelled coaching the Colorado Buffaloes this season. His sons Shedeur and Shilo will be leaving Boulder after this season. And that means Deion might be looking for greener pastures. Sanders and Jerry Jones could be a match made in heaven. Or that other place deep below the earth’s surface. But Deion would undoubtedly love to coach his son in the NFL. Given Prescott's injury history, the Cowboys could work Deion and Sheduer (by moving up in the draft) into some sort of wacky package deal. Don't be surprised if Dallas tries to make that happen.

Kellen Moore +600

Buzz: The Eagles righted their ship this season after suffering their post-Super Bowl-loss hangover last season. OC Kellen Moore was able to keep the peace on offense, take advantage of Saquon Barkley's arrival, and help guide the Eagles to the NFC East title and a Wild Card round win in the playoffs.

Bobby Slowik +750

BuzzBobby Slowik is the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans. On paper, the Texans have a QB in C.J. Stroud who is similar to the best version of Dak Prescott. Both are run-first types who can keep defenses guessing. As long as they limit the mistakes. Slowik helped Stroud lead the Texans to the postseason as a rookie and in Year 2. He may be the best-fit for the Cowboys in terms of the type of coach they need. The Texans tore up the LA Chargers in the Wild Card round. Slowik's stock could soar with an upset of Kansas City in the Divisional Round. But he lacks the punch and big-name recognition that might be necessary in a place like Dallas.

Ben Johnson +950

Buzz: As Lions offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson sees his name come up in these situations on a recurring basis. He’ll be atop everyone’s next coach list if the Lions are able to finally reach the Super Bowl, never mind win it.

Jason Witten +1000

Buzz: A former Cowboys tight end, Jason Witten is beloved by Cowboys fans. He would be making a monstrous leap from being the head coach at a college prep school, Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas, to "America's Team."

BIll Belichick +1200

Buzz: Don't count out "The Hoodie." Bill Belichick took the North Carolina head coaching job last month. But rumblings persist about a possible return to the NFL. There, Belichick coached in one form or another for nearly 50 years. He and the Patriots "mutually parted ways" after the 2023 season, following nearly a quarter-century in Foxboro. If Belichick leaves Chapel Hill for Dallas before June 1, it will cost him/Jerry Jones a $10 million buyout.
