The Dallas Cowboys are the biggest flop in the NFL this season.

Yes, one could have written that line any time since 1995.

But this year’s version of the Cowboys has delivered a unique mix of dysfunction, disappointment, and despair. Somehow, Mike McCarthy has earned a level of immunity not seen this side of UN diplomat.

Each time his fate is raised with owner Jerry Jones, his place as Cowboys’ head coach grows more secure.

Dak Prescott underwent season-ending surgery this week. The loss of Prescott for the season may have secured McCarthy’s job for this season at least.

McCarthy will be the coach of the Dallas Cowboys for the rest of this season. So says Jones.

Jones said he won’t fire McCarthy in-season because he’s already done that in the past and regretted it.

But there are no guarantees for 2025.

Let's take a look.

Dallas Cowboys 2025 Head Coach: Names To Watch & Why

Dallas Cowboys 2025 Head Coach Odds: Brady (not that one), Belichick Top List 1

Among the coaches who may end up in Dallas next season are several well-known names, and some others who are not. Here's a breakdown:

Joe Brady (+500)

Buzz: The last Bills OC who moved on to a head coaching job was Brian Daboll. After just 2 seasons, Daboll is on the clock with the Giants. On paper, the NFL nerds drool over the possibility of an offensive guru line Brady being given the keys to Dak Prescott (or maybe the likes of Shedeur Sanders) and the offensive skill players under contract to the Cowboys. Bills OC Joe Brady doesn’t harbor any delusions of wanting to play GM, or but heads with Jones. A plus for any candidate here, but . . .

Bill Belichick +525

Buzz: Bill Belichick has been headed to Dallas in the chat rooms and on social media after every Cowboys’ loss since last year’s playoff debacle against Green Bay. Belichick would be a slam dunk if it was believed he and Jones would be able to manifest a power-sharing agreement that could satisfy their Texas-sized egos. The Cowboys fanbase is starving for a coach like Belichick, who brings a winning pedigree and the cache of an NFL legend.

Mike Vrabel +675

BuzzMike Vrabel is the prototypical NFL defensive stalwart. He was a dominant linebacker with an outsized personality. He failed to keep the Titans on track before he was let go after last season as their head coach. Vrabel owns Super Bowl rings and commands any locker room. But he’s a defensive head coach in a league focused on scoring. The question here is whether that outweighs Vrabel’s status as Bill Belichick’s Mini-Me.

Ben Johnson +700

Buzz: As Lions offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson sees his name come up in these situations on a recurring basis. He’ll be atop everyone’s next coach list if the Lions are able to finally reach the Super Bowl, never mind win it.

Wes Phillips +1000

Buzz: The Vikings began the season shocking oddsmakers and opponents. But their offense – led by Sam Darnold – has sputtered of late. That has diminished the prospects for Wes Phillips here and elsewhere.

Bobby Slowik +1150

BuzzBobby Slowik is the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans. On paper, the Texans have a QB in C.J. Stroud who is similar to the best version of Dak Prescott. Both are run-first types who can keep defenses guessing. As long as they limit the mistakes. Slowik helped Stroud lead the Texans to the postseason as a rookie. He may be the best-fit for the Cowboys in terms of the type of coach they need. But he lacks the punch and big-name recognition that might be necessary in a place like Dallas.

Tony Romo +1200

Buzz: The former Cowboys QB, Tony Romo doesn’t hold back in the booth calling games alongside Jim Nantz for CBS. But Romo appears far more concerned with his golf game than any venture into the coaching ranks.

Mike McCarthy +1300

Buzz: Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has another 2 months to win over skeptics. If he can finish strong with the likes of Cooper Rush and Trey Lance at QB, it might win over hearts and minds across Jerry World. But that's unlikely.

Deion Sanders +1300

Buzz: Coach Prime won a Super Bowl ring playing for the Cowboys. He’s excelled coaching the Colorado Buffaloes this season. His team is in a position to earn a spot in the Big 12 title game and earn a spot in the College Football Playoff. But his sons Sheduer and Shilo will be leaving Boulder after this season. And that means Deion might be looking for greener pastures. Sanders and Jerry Jones could be a match made in heaven. Or that other place deep below the earth’s surface. But Deion would undoubtedly love to coach his son in the NFL. And with Cooper Rush and Trey Lance at QB, the Cowboys have a shot to make a run at a top pick.

Dabo Swinney +1500

Buzz: Clemson’s ceiling may be limited, even in an expanded College Football Playoff. Dabo Swinney has been coaching the Tigers since 2009. Given the immense money available for SEC and Big Ten schools, the Tigers and most of the ACC simply won’t be able to compete as the NIL monster grows. The biggest challenge for Dabo here, or with any other pro team, is that he has zero NFL experience on his resume.
