After Verstappen won from 14th on the grid at Spa-Francorchamps last Sunday, the question is: Who can stop the championship leader at Zandvoort?

The Dutchman did, after all, sweep past the field with ease in Belgium and lead home a Red Bull 1-2 finish while Ferrari’s pole position starter Carlos Sainz – who only inherited P1 on the grid after Verstappen was bumped down the order with grid penalties – ended up settling for third at the checkered flag.

This weekend it seems that Verstappen is set to continue his winning run, and last year’s performance at Zandvoort – where he won by over 20 seconds – will only strike more fear into the rest of the grid; McLaren’s Lando Norris has already told De Telegraaf: “It’s Max’s, everyone knows it’s Max’s already…”

Will it be so simple this weekend? Perhaps, but there is a chance that Mercedes and Ferrari will fight for the remaining podium places given this track layout encourages a similar set-up to that of Hungary – a lower-speed, higher-downforce configuration than Belgium, where Verstappen dominated.

Norris might be resigned to a Max win, but there’s plenty of money to be made on the side on betting sites this weekend.

2022 Dutch Grand Prix Predictions

Starting with qualifying, it’s hard to look past Verstappen – favorite for pole position via BetMGM with odds of -170 – and this time around he won’t cop grid penalties, something we predicted might hit him back in Belgium. Speaking of grid penalties, which are handed out for engine and gearbox changes, the Mercedes drivers, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo, AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly, the Aston Martins, Williams, and Alfa Romeo’s Guanyu Zhou are all at risk of taking a penalty.

Out of all of them, Hamilton is perhaps most at risk of dropping down the order given his heavy lap 1 crash at Spa; the rest of the drivers will be aiming to take their penalties at high-speed Monza where overtaking is easier.

Note that payouts for qualifying usually don’t take grid penalties into account, so while we backed Sainz to take pole in Belgium – and he did start on pole position – Verstappen ruined that call by winning qualifying despite his demotion to 14th on the final grid.

Tack on a bet for pole to be taken by 0.101-0.250s via BetMGM, who are offering odds of +225. It might be a short track where such margins are hard to find, but given Verstappen’s pace right now that is a wise bet to make.

When it comes to the race, we tipped Verstappen to win by more than 10 seconds in Belgium and he won by 17 seconds. Once again, it’s worth backing him to win by 10+ in the Netherlands. BetMGM are offering +600 for anyone to win the Dutch Grand Prix by 11-15.999 sec – a smaller margin than Verstappen achieved in 2021, but a realistic one given it should be much easier to overtake on this circuit given the new breed of 2022 cars.

As Russell and Hamilton completed the podium in Hungary, back Russell to get onto the podium here. He has odds of +200 on BetMGM while for both Mercedes to get on a podium – subject to a potential Hamilton penalty – Caesars Sportsbook has odds of +600 or BetMGM offers +550.

Pierre Gasly was rapid last time out in Belgium, and last year at Zandvoort. He has odds of +125 for a top 10 finish this year, as does Valtteri Bottas – who has been very unfortunate not to score in recent races and should get back into the points this weekend.

Last year, we didn’t see a Safety Car at Zandvoort and if you’re confident there will be a lack of cautions in this year’s Dutch Grand Prix, there are odds of +160 on offer via Caesars Sportsbook. It is more likely that Nicholas Latifi will finish last with all drivers classified, and odds for him to do that are +175 on BetMGM.
