The NFL Coaching Hot Seat is unplugged, for now.

But there are several teams whose coaches may find themselves in employment peril if their teams do not get off to successful starts early this season.

Eight NFL teams begin the 2024 season with new coaches when compared to the start of the 2023 season. The Patriots “mutually agreed to part ways” with Bill Belichick this past January after 24 seasons and replaced him with first-year coach Jerod Mayo. The other seven spots were opened up when coaches were outright fired.

Josh McDaniels was the “First NFL Coach Fired” in 2023. He was removed as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders on November 1, after just 8 games into his second season with the team.

Who will follow in McDaniels’ footsteps for the 2024 First NFL Coach Fired honors?

Let’s take a look.

Familiar Names Return To List In 2024

Among the coaches expected to feel the heat early into the 2024 season are some familiar names from last season’s NFL futures list. Here's a breakdown of some names to watch.

Brian Daboll, Giants (+150)

Giants coach Brian Daboll remains the favorite on our list to be the “NFL First Head Coach Fired” in 2024 for 3 weeks in a row. His price spiked from +300 to +150 this week. The Giants lost in disastrous form on Sunday, losing to the Commanders 21-18 despite scoring 3 TDs and giving up none. Big Blue lost running back Saquon Barkley this offseason to, of all teams, the Eagles. The Giants used 3 different starting QBs last season. This season, they’ve opted to run it back one more time with Daniel Jones. He’s backed up by Drew Lock and New Jersey’s 3rd Favorite Son, Tommy DeVito.

Daboll was under fire late last season as the Giants churned through QBs. But the ownership wasn’t quite ready to dump him after just two seasons. But this year got off to an embarrassing start in Week 1. Tick. Tick. Tick.

Zac Taylor, Bengals (+500)

Zac Taylor's name is a newcomer to this list. His Bengals were declawed by the Patriots in Week 1 before they came up short in Kansas City Sunday. (The Swifties needed another assist from Park Avenue to save the day.) Joe Burrow can't do it by himself. And neither can the defense. The team appeared listless and without emotion in Week 1. At least they put up a fight in KC. A contract spat with Ja'Marr Chase hasn't helped Taylor and  Burrow get re-acclimated this season. Hopes are high along the Ohio River. That means Taylor could be on a very short leash.

Matt Eberflus, Bears (+650)

Matt Eberflus, another regular on the list in 2023, starts his third season as coach of the Bears with the blessing and curse of having QB Caleb Williams in the fold. Williams was No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft. Barring injury or some other catastrophe, The Bears defense has been stellar in both of their games, thanks to the defensive specialist Eberflus. But offensive coordinator, Shane Waldron needs to find a way to get No. 1 overall pick and rookie Williams comfortable, moving the ball, and pushing it into the end zone. The Bears lost a close one to the Texans Sunday night, but this number softened a bit.

Robert Saleh, Jets (+650)

The Jets were able to take advantage of the bungling Titans Sunday and left Nashville with a 24-17 win. Aaron Rodgers is back in the fold, and has yet to get back to his old Green Bay self. Ever Jets coach has been on the hot seat since Weeb Eubank led Gang Green to its lone Super Bowl win 45 years ago. Robert Saleh will suffer the same fate as most of his predecessors (at least the ones who were fired) sooner rather and later if the Jets stumble. Especially with Bill Belichick looming.

Mike McCarthy, Cowboys (+900)

The most intriguing name on the list is Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy. Social media lit aflame with faux images of Belichick's flight plans to Dallas as the Cowboys got crushed 41-19 by New Orleans on Sunday. The Cowboys cannot score. And it's not all on Dak Prescott. The team has no running game, having found no answer to the departed Anthony Pollard. He's averaged 71 YPG this season in Tennessee. Another stumble at home against Baltimore in Week 3 will push McCarthy up toward the top of this list. Especially with Belichick crooning across multiple media platforms.

Kevin Stefanski, Browns (+1000)

Kevin Stefanski and the Browns got a rude introduction into 2024. The Jaguars turned out to be the perfect cure in Week 2. Still, Deshaun Watson has yet to demonstrate his ability to a game with his arm or legs. His contract is fast becoming the worst in football. But dumping him would cost incur a $90 million cap hit. Stefanski may end up being the fall guy in Cleveland.

Nick Sirianni, Eagles (+1000)

Nick Sirianni’s name is another one to watch. The Eagles crashed last season due to injuries and the traditional post-Super Bowl-loss hangover. Philly has rebuilt its offensive line in the wake of Jason Kelce’s retirement. But his seat will be another one put on simmer if the Eagles don’t continue to win. Especially if he remains at odds with franchise QB Jalen Hurts
