Betting odds for ”Nomadland” to win the best picture at the 2021 Oscars spiked following its award for Best Motion Picture - Drama at the Golden Gobles earlier this year. “Nomadland” was priced at -150 to win Best Picture at the Oscars on the UK betting site Ladbrokes immediately after that award and now with U.S. bookmaker DraftKings offering odds, the picture is an even bigger favorite at -670. “Nomadland” was +150 to claim the top prize at the Academy Awards before winning at the Golden Globes.

“Nomadland” was offered through Hulu and in select theatres. It stars Frances McDormand as a woman (Fern) who loses everything in the Great Recession after her husband’s death. She has chosen to live her life in a van full-time on the road at various sites across the western United States. As the film notes, she is “houseless but not homeless.” The film’s director, Chloé Zhao, won the Golden Globe for Best Director – Motion Picture.

Bettors in Michigan can wager on the Oscars for the first time in 2021; the Michigan Gaming Control Board announced on April 12 that every major Academy Awards category will be available for bets. It remains to be seen how many other states with legal sports betting sites in the United States will offer odds on the 2021 Oscar winners; as of April 12, DraftKings had odds on about two dozen categories and PointsBet offered Best Picture odds in Michigan. In 2020, New Jersey and Indiana offered betting on the Oscars and are doing so again in 2021.

The Globes are often a major harbinger of what to expect at the Oscars. The finalists for the Oscars were announced on March 15. The Academy Awards are set to air on ABC on Sunday, April 25.

Here are the latest Best Picture Odds for the 2021 Oscars, according to DraftKings, as of April 19.

Oscars Best Picture Odds

Film Odds
Nomadland -670
The Trial of the Chicago 7 +600
Minari +1400
Promising Young Woman +1700
Mank +3300
Judas And The Black Messiah +3300
Sound of Metal +5000
The Father +10000

“The Trial of the Chicago 7” moved to +300 from +400 after the Globes and “Minari” edged up to +1600 to +1200. Those were the only notable potential Oscar Best Picture nominees that saw their odds improve since the Globes, and both have lost a bit of ground since. The other potential nominees saw their odds fall significantly.

A solid second behind “Nomadland,” the Netfilx drama “Trial Of The Chicago 7” dramatizes the legal battle of seven people charged in connection with the protests, riots and mayhem that ensnared the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago.

“Minari” details the story of a Korean family that relocates to the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. Lee Isaac Chung’s semi-autobiographical film was produced by A24 films. It won Best Foreign Language film at the Globes Sunday, even though it was filmed in the United States. The 2020 Oscar winner for Best Picture was “Parasite,” a South Korean comedy-thriller that also won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.
