The PGA Tour’s Hawaii swing continues at this week’s Sony Open, where everyone’s invited as the golf betting action continues coming off Cameron Smith’s record-setting win at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Smith, who won the 2020 Sony Open, is favored at sportsbooks and betting sites with +800 odds. The Aussie just set a new scoring record relative to par with a 33-under-par 258 at Kapalua.

Webb Simpson is second at +1200 while Marc Leishman and Sungjae Im are next at +1600. Hideki Matsuyama and Corey Conners round out the top six at +1800.

Sony Open Expert Pick & Betting Tips

Best Bet: Billy Horschel Top-10 Finish

Odds: +400 at BetMGM

We hit on a Marc Leishman top-10 finish at +200 last week to start the new year right. We’ve got our eyes on another top-10 guy to keep it rolling with Billy Horschel at +400.

He’s coming off a T-23 finish at the Tournament of Champions – near the bottom of the limited field - but should fare better this week when accuracy is more important off the tee. Horschel finished T-7 here a year ago with four consecutive rounds of 66 or lower, and he’ll be fresher than most of the field having already made the lengthy trip to Hawaii two weeks ago.

We like the odds at BetMGM on Horschel for a top-10 finish at +400.

Sony Open Betting Tips

This will be a birdie fest like last week. It might not look as impressive on the leaderboard at Waialae Country Club’s par-70 layout, but conditions are still soft and players know they need to make a lot of birdies to contend this week.

Accuracy will be more important this week both off the tee and on the approach shot. The fairways and greens are small compared to the massive expanse that is the Plantation Course – not overly penal, but enough to make a difference between a top-15 and a missed cut.

We also have plenty of course history to go on at this longstanding tournament. We’re targeting guys that keep it on the short stuff, can get hot with the irons and have played well at this course at least a time or two in the past.

With online betting in New York now live, new sign-ups at FanDuel New York in the Empire State can grab a risk-free first bet worth up to $1,000 to use on the Sony Open.
