Christmas Chocolate Ranked: What Are The Odds On The First Sweet Taken?

Christmas Chocolate Ranked. What are the odds on the first sweet to be taken

Picture the scene: you’re heading round to auntie Margaret’s for Christmas and you know there are going to be chocolates for all to graze on. But what are you hoping to see there? You could be a Celebrations or Heroes person, or maybe you prefer the more traditional Roses or Quality Street.

Are you polite and wait for others to have a first go at the tub, potentially bringing about the disappointment of being left with the runt of the litter? Do you dive in first so you can secure your favourites? Bookies.com has tried to discover the perfect scenario.

After polling a selection of the population, we may have stumbled across the answer to that age-old question: which is the best Christmas chocolate selection and what are the odds that your favourite will be available when you dip in?

Prepare to be outraged and salivating in equal measure as we go through the results below.

Cadbury Heroes

odds on first cadbury hero taken

Heroes tubs feature nine popular Cadbury treats. Our poll showed a very clear split in terms of the favourites and the stragglers. Somewhat controversially, the Marmite of the chocolate world - the Crème Egg - was joint-top in our poll for the most likely sweet to be taken first. Crunchie Bits shared that honour, with Cadbury’s Caramel and Dairy Milk next.

That’s where the split comes. All of the rest are the Heroes you’re likely to find at the bottom of the tub towards the end of Boxing Day. The day’s sport is over, the Santa hat is getting chewed up by the dog and you’re looking at the tree wondering when it’s time for it to come down. This is when you’re likely to have all the Dinky Deckers, Twirls, Wispas and Fudges you can stomach.

The least popular sweet in this tub, according to our poll, is the Eclair. When December turns to January and the Heroes tub becomes a sewing kit, it’s all but guaranteed that a few unwanted Eclairs will be stuffed away at the back of the cupboard along with the needles and thread, waiting to be discovered some time in the new year.

Celebrations

odds on first celebration taken first

Fans of Maltesers are going to need to hope auntie Margaret gets a new tub out of the cupboard when they arrive. The sweet picked up a massive 39% of the vote for best Celebration and got the nod as best sweet in all tubs from 29% of the respondents. During “testing”, we also noticed tubs usually contained fewer Maltesers compared to other sweets. Politeness needs to go out the window if you’re looking to pick one of these out!

Snickers made its way into second place with a quarter of the votes, with a surprising bronze medal picked up by Bounty. The coconut flavour obviously divides opinion as it also received the most votes for worst overall sweet.

Fans of any of the Celebrations should be looking forward to Christmas as the tub received 43% of the best tub vote. So the chances are if you’re heading to someone's house over the festive season, Celebrations will be the sweets you’re offered.

Spare a thought for Milky Way as it was the only sweet not to pick up a vote for best sweet in its tub out of all four tubs. Very much the Paul Scholes of the Christmas sweets, nobody votes for it while it is there, but retire it from the box and everyone will tell you how great they thought it was.

Quality Street

odds on first quality street taken first

Since the Green Triangle has its own spin off box of chocolates and other products, you might have thought it would run away with being everyone’s favourite Quality Street. Think again. Chocolate fans find the Strawberry Delight, well, a delight and it took top spot in our poll. It had a shade under 20 percent of the vote, with Green Triangle fans left to lick their wounds with just 16 percent of the vote.

Said fans can take solace from the fact that, if you’re late to the Quality Street party, your favourites are likely to still all be there! The same can certainly be said for fans of the Dairy Milk Block, The Purple One and Toffee Finger, which all came joint last when people voted for their favourite in the Quality Street tub.

For our sins, we also asked participants which of the sweets from the big four boxes would be the first gone and last left after everyone has had their fill. To maybe no one’s surprise, Quality Street were seen as the middle of the road collection. None of them had a greater share than 3.6 percent of the vote on favourite sweets, while nothing had a higher percentage than 5.4 for those voting for their least favourite.

All that tells us is that if Margie has the Quality Street out, you’re almost certain to find something you don’t mind no matter how late you arrive on Christmas day.

Roses

odds on first roses chocolate taken first

Roses has nine chocolates to choose from, and eight of them describe perfectly what they are. The most popular is the one that doesn’t do that: the Golden Barrel. This caramel-filled treat took over 33% of votes from our poll, making it the second most-chosen sweet across all four tubs and was a clear victor here.

After a scrap for the Golden Barrel, you should have plenty of choice left in the Roses tub. The next most popular, the delectably-named Dreamy Strawberry Cream, took little over 12% of the vote. The other seven chocolates all landed in the 5-11% range, so there’s definitely something for everybody.

If you’re a fan of Roses, you’ll probably be able to nab plenty of choccies before anyone else gets their mitts into it. Our poll showed that just 16% of people would choose Roses over the other three tubs, and only 16% of respondents picked a Roses chocolate as their overall favourite.

As well, plenty of people seemingly went out of their way to pick a Roses chocolate as their overall least favourite. Creamy Orange was the second least-liked of all the sweets, taking 16% of the vote to trail only Bounty, whilst Hazelnut Whirl clocked in third at 9%.

Which Christmas Chocolates to Jump on Early

Based on our poll, the undisputed king of the Christmas chocolates tub is the Malteser. It picked up over a quarter of the overall votes for favourite sweet, with Snickers being the only other to collect more than a handful of votes.

If you have a more sophisticated palate and fancy a Bounty, you’ll probably get away with playing the waiting game. This coconut filled treat got most votes for least favourite sweet, so you probably won’t need to play your hand early to get one. Our advice is to go for your second favourite, knowing Bounties will likely be there right at the end.

The same goes for the Creamy Oranges in Roses tubs, which came out of our poll as the second least favourite sweet overall.
