Emiliano Martinez is a World Cup winner who has been with Aston Villa since 2020, when he completed a move from Arsenal. The 30-year-old remains the first-choice goalkeeper at Villa Park, but there has been some speculation regarding his future this summer.

While it currently appears likely that Villa will keep hold of a player who signed a new five-and-a-half-year deal in January 2022 with the Midlands club, there has been some interest from Internazionale, who are looking for an Andre Onana replacement. However, it remains open to question as to whether Villa actually want to sell, but that hasn’t stopped betting sites from speculating on his next destination.

Inter Milan Aiming to Swoop For Martinez

The majority of transfer speculation surrounding Emiliano Martinez relates to Internazionale at the time of writing. It seems as though the Milan club have shown an interest in the World Cup Golden Glove winner after losing Andre Onana to Manchester United this summer.

It was reported towards the end of July that Villa had rejected a bid for a player who arrived from Arsenal for the sum of £17 million in September 2020. The reported offer of somewhere in the region of £13 million would appear to be much less than Villa would be likely to accept. Perhaps Inter will come calling again after also losing club captain Samir Handanovic over the summer.

It’s hard to see why Martinez would want to agitate for a move away from Villa Park at this stage of his career after they qualified for this season's Europa Conference League. He is the first-choice goalkeeper for World Cup winners Argentina and clearly a player who is integral to Unai Emery’s plans at Aston Villa. However, there is no smoke without fire, and the leading betting apps think a move isn’t beyond the realms of possibility.

Could Chelsea Make Martinez Their First-Choice?

Chelsea are seemingly being linked with every player under the sun, and they have previously shown an interest in Emi Martinez. Earlier this year, they signed his compatriot Enzo Fernandez, and perhaps that could lure his compatriot to Stamford Bridge to be part of the Blues revolution. The latest odds from the best football betting sites would suggest Chelsea are among the front-runners.

Mauricio Pochettino is another Argentine connection who can potentially persuade Martinez to make the switch. Robert Sanchez is the current first-choice goalkeeper at Chelsea following the departures of Edouard Mendy and Kepa, but they have also been linked with a move for Djorde Petrovic.

Even so, Martinez is under contract at Aston Villa, and it would take a huge sum to potentially wrest the keeper away from his current club. The 30-year-old has several years of his career ahead of him, and Chelsea might be thwated with any attempt to sign him.

Manchester United Also Linked With Martinez

It appeared as though Manchester United had an interest in replacing David De Gea with Emiliano Martinez earlier in the summer, but the arrival of Andre Onana has probably put paid to any chance of the former arriving.

Martinez will certainly want to continue playing first-team football at the age of 30 in order to command his first-team spot in the Argentina national side, with an understudy role at Old Trafford therefore holding little to no appeal.
