Some 28 years after their last appearance, Scotland are back in the World Cup. An impressive qualifying campaign saw them top their group thanks to dramatic late goals from Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean in the final game, a 4-2 win over Denmark.

Having come so close to previous World Cups but never quite managing to get over the hump, just being in the 2026 edition is a grand achievement in itself. However, all associated with Scotland won’t want to be there just to make up the numbers, especially considering even finishing third in Group C could put them into the knockout stages for the first time ever.

Scotland to Win World Cup Odds

It’s little surprise that UK betting sites make Scotland huge outsiders to lift the World Cup for the first time ever. Though they certainly won't be lacking in support across the entire country, Scotland are up against it to make waves in the tournament.

Indeed, they’ve never made it past the groups before and aren’t considered a powerhouse of world football, so new betting sites are perfectly content giving Steve Clarke’s men plenty of rope.

Scotland Group C Odds

Even if winning the World Cup is almost certainly beyond Scotland, they’ll fancy their chances of springing some upsets in the group stage. They’ve been drawn with Brazil, Morocco and Haiti in Group C, which presents at least one winnable game, but betting apps still aren't fancying Scotland to top the group.

This will actually be the fifth time that Scotland have faced Brazil at the World Cup, and the Tartan Army will be hoping their team can channel the spirit of 1974 when they held the then-world champions to a 0-0 draw.

Even if Scotland don’t win Group C, they’ll still be confident of qualifying considering eight of the 12 best third-placed teams go through. Indeed, football betting sites are expecting Clarke's men to grace the last 32 at the very least:

Scotland Top Scorer Odds

Scotland’s squad isn’t exactly flush with goalscoring talent, but Lawrence Shankland has been in fine fettle this season for Hearts, netting 16 times to take his tally to 88 across the last four seasons.

Cult hero Scott McTominay has popped up with some crucial goals for Napoli since moving there in 2024 and has done the same for Scotland, including his famous bicycle kick goal that put his country up 1-0 against Denmark and set the stage for that 4-2 victory.

The tenacious John McGinn has 20 international goals to his name, which puts him fifth all-time for Scotland and may prove to be a popular choice.

Scotland Stage of Elimination Odds

It’s safe to say that Apple Pay betting sites aren’t expecting amazing things from Scotland this summer, although they are at least fancying Clarke’s men to get out of the group. That would probably be the bare minimum levels of expectation for Scottish fans, too, with everything after that potentially being considered a bonus.

Indeed, if Scotland are to finish third and qualify, they’ll play a group winner in the last 32. Even coming second would see them up against it, as they would face the winner of Group F, hence why betting sites aren’t expecting progressing beyond that.

Scotland Match Odds

Scotland open their World Cup campaign with possibly their biggest match: Haiti. It should be a straightforward win against the debutants, but with goal difference potentially being a huge factor for the third-place qualifiers, this will be one where Scotland need to rack up the goals.

Clarke’s charges then head to Boston to play 2022 semi-finalists Morocco before closing out the group stage against Brazil in Miami. Find the current odds for all three games below:

Scotland World Cup Squad

Scotland’s squad has a strong mix of youth and experience that could make them underestimated. The seemingly eternal Craig Gordon will be sharing the pearls of his 43-year-old wisdom to Angus Gunn in goal, whilst defence will see Andy Robertson finally grace a World Cup as he closes in on Kenny Dalglish’s all-time caps record.

Four of Scotland’s midfield all have more than 50 caps with veterans Scott McTominay, John McGinn, Ryan Christie and Kenny McLean all in the squad along with 19-year-old Findlay Curtis and 20-year-old Ben Gannon-Doak.

Finally, Lyndon Dykes, Che Adams, Lawrence Shankland, George Hirst and Ross Stewart will all be fighting to start up top in a coveted striker role that nobody has yet to truly stake a claim to.

Scotland World Cup History

Scotland’s World Cup record isn’t the most flattering with eight appearances and eight group-stage exits. In that time they’ve only won four and drawn seven of the 23 games they’ve played, although they were only knocked out on goal difference in 1974, 1978 and 1982.

Their last appearance, at France ’98, saw them finish bottom of Group A after losing to Brazil and Morocco, and claiming a draw against Norway.

Scotland World Cup Betting Tips

It’s hard to know what to expect from Scotland at this World Cup, except their usual traits of grit and tenacity. They might even gain a few fans along the way. Arguably, nobody typifies that attitude quite like Scott McTominay.

The Napoli midfielder had a knack of popping up with important goals for Manchester United and has done the same in Serie A, as well as for Scotland, and he looks a good bet to be the team top scorer at 10/3 with Paddy Power.
