Records are made to be broken and we might not have long to wait for the next to fall in the Premier League this season. When it comes to opening weekend goals, four players share the record with eight goals. Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and Mohamed Salah lead the way, but Salah can become the all-time leader this weekend.

Lampard, Rooney and the league’s all-time leading goalscorer Shearer have all hung their boots up, and at 31, the Egyptian might have a couple more opportunities to set a new record. Salah has two more years left on his current contract at Anfield, and if he fulfils that deal, he could be the first player to reach double figures in opening weekend goals.

Salah and Liverpool are preparing for Sunday’s trip to Chelsea, a club Salah played for without a great deal of success from January 2014 to August 2016. Will Salah find the net at Stamford Bridge and become the league’s all-time leading scorer during the opening weekend? Bookies.com assesses his chances with the latest odds from the leading football betting sites.

Will Salah’s Opening Weekend Streak Continue?

No current player starts a Premier League season better than Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian has scored for Liverpool in each of their last six Premier League openers. At the start of the 2017/18 season, Salah gave the Reds a 3-2 lead in the 57th minute of their first league game at Watford, who secured a point in a 3-3 draw in the final minute.

The following season, Jurgen Klopp’s side opened their domestic campaign at home to West Ham, and they strolled to a 4-0 win with their Egyptian forward scoring the first goal. At the start of the 2019/20 season, the fixture computer drew them with newly-promoted Norwich at Anfield. Liverpool cantered to a 4-1 win with Salah’s goal giving his side a 2-0 lead in the 19th minute.

Leeds United were Liverpool’s first opponents the following season, and the newly-promoted side gave a very good account of themselves in a 4-3 defeat to the Reds. Salah started the season with a hat-trick, two of which came from penalties. The following season, Norwich City were once again pitted against Liverpool. Although the game was played at Carrow Road, the outcome was the same as Liverpool won 3-0 with Salah scoring his side's third.

Last August, Liverpool faced a newly-promoted side in their opening game for the fourth successive season, this time in the shape of Fulham. Liverpool trailed 2-1 with 10 minutes to go when Salah popped up to save his side once again. No player has scored in as many consecutive Premier League opening weekend games as Salah.

Salah Is Favourite To Score First

Mohamed Salah is favourite to be the first goalscorer at Stamford Bridge on Sunday on many of the best football betting apps. Betting sites might have had Christopher Nkunku as the favourite, but Chelsea announced their summer signing will be sidelined for an 'extended period' after undergoing knee surgery. Salah finished last season with 19 goals, 17 behind Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. If Salah is to win a fourth Golden Boot this season, getting off to a fast start would help.

If you have received a free bet offer ahead of the start of the new season, why not use it on Salah at 6/1 to open the scoring on Sunday. The 31-year-old is 2/1 to be an anytime scorer, 10/1 to score twice and 50/1 to repeat what he did in Liverpool’s season opener against Leeds in August 2020, and score a hat-trick.

The third of Salah’s Golden Boots was awarded at the end of the 2021/22 season when he shared it with Tottenham’s Heung-Min Son after scoring 23 goals each. Salah is 9/1 to finish the season as the league’s leading scorer for the fourth time.
