With the future of LeBron James questionable after the Lakers second round playoff loss to the Thunder, Bookies.com oddsmakers have put together hypothetical NBA odds for where James could be playing in 2027, or if he may call it curtains on his Hall of Fame career. James will turn 42 in December, and has played in the Association since he was 18 years old.

LA remains the overwhelming frontrunner. LeBron and Bronny becoming the first father-son teammates in NBA history is a storyline too powerful to leave behind. The Lakers market, his business empire, and his family's LA roots make this the path of least resistance. Re-signing would also cement his status as a Laker for life.

He already did it once — returning to Cleveland and delivering the championship he promised. A second homecoming to finish his career where it all began, in front of the city he loves most, would be the storybook ending. Cleveland's young core (Mitchell, Garland) gives him real contention pieces.

The one rivalry that defines an era — LeBron and the Warriors. Joining Golden State would be the most shocking move in NBA history and the ultimate ring-chasing accusation. But if the Warriors rebuild their contending core and Steph is still elite, don't count this out. SF Bay is another top media market for his empire.

At 41 (turning 42 in December 2026), with a scoring record already broken, four rings, and a media empire (SpringHill, Uninterrupted, Space Jam 2 money), LeBron may simply walk away. His legacy is sealed. He's talked openly about playing alongside Bronny as his only remaining goal — once that chapter closes, retirement becomes very real.

LeBron has always had an eye on New York — the biggest stage in basketball. If the Knicks continue building toward contention, the media capital of the world offers unmatched business synergy for his off-court empire. A long shot, but Knicks fans have dreamed of this for a decade.

Phoenix, Dallas, Chicago — dark horses exist. A superteam forming around a young franchise could lure him. There's also the wildcard of an international league appearance or an ownership-player hybrid arrangement. LeBron's free agency has surprised before and could again.

Age: LeBron will be 42 years old during his 2027 free agency. A decision on retirement vs. one last run looms large.
Empire: SpringHill Co., Uninterrupted, and his Las Vegas NBA franchise bid all factor into market and location preferences.

Top Teams For LeBron James In 2027

Take a look at where James could wind up in 2027 -- if he even plays at all.

Los Angeles Lakers (+150)

The overwhelming favorite, and for good reason. LeBron's business empire is headquartered in Los Angeles, his family is rooted there, and the ongoing father-son storyline with Bronny James on the roster is a narrative too powerful to abandon mid-chapter. Unless another destination offers a dramatically clearer path to a fifth ring, the Lakers are the default destination. A healthy Luka Doncic will also go a long way.

Cleveland Cavaliers (+400)

He already did the impossible once -- returning home to deliver Cleveland its only major professional sports championship in 52 years. A second homecoming to finish his career in Northeast Ohio, alongside a Cavaliers core that is about to reach the Eastern Conference Finals, would be the most fitting storybook ending the sport has ever seen. Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley and potentially James Harden give him real contention infrastructure, not a rebuild. The possible twist: does this Cavs roster need him?

Golden State Warriors (+600)

The most shocking move in NBA history would also be the most ruthlessly logical. If Steph Curry remains elite and Golden State assembles the pieces for one final run, LeBron joining the franchise that pushed him in four Finals appearances is the ultimate "if you can't beat them" statement -- and the Bay Area market fits his business footprint perfectly. With Steve Kerr also back on a two-year deal, the Warriors are in win-now mode for James' final season(s).

No Team / Retire (+700)

Don't dismiss this. At 41, with the all-time scoring record secured, four championships, and a media and business portfolio that rivals active ownership stakes, LeBron has less left to prove than any player in league history. The moment Bronny's chapter in Los Angeles reaches a natural stopping point, walking away becomes a genuine and dignified option.

New York Knicks (+900)

The Knicks are building something real under a front office that finally has its act together. New York is the one market that rivals Los Angeles for media gravity, and the business synergies for a man with LeBron's commercial ambitions are obvious -- but the basketball fit and roster construction would need to align precisely. The Knicks, like the Cavs, may not need to add James to an already talented roster.

Miami Heat (+1100)

Two of his four rings live in South Beach, and his relationship with Pat Riley -- complicated as it still is -- represents some of his finest basketball years. A reunion in Miami would require Riley to rebuild around a 41-year-old, which is a significant roster bet, but stranger things have happened in this league.

The Field (+1500)

Phoenix, Dallas, and Chicago all carry some residual logic -- contention windows, market size, or coaching fits that could theoretically appeal. But at this stage of LeBron's career, a true wildcard destination would require a near-perfect storm of circumstances that makes the long odds feel appropriate.
