Unimpressed with the direction of the program, Charlotte fired head football coach Biff Poggi after less than two seasons at the helm. The 49ers were mired in a four-game losing streak and the future wasn’t looking bright enough for leadership.

Former Minnesota coach Tim Brewster is taking over on an interim basis, but who will take over the program full-time for 2025 and beyond? The team has a solid fan base, but no winning seasons in the last decade.

Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has locked in his college football odds as to who leads Charlotte out of the tunnel next season.

Charlotte Head Coach Contenders

While Brewster has decades of experience coaching in the state, it’s more likely Charlotte looks outward to find a new leader for their locker room.

Ole Miss co-offensive coordinator Joe Cox is a Charlotte native who is helping to guide a Rebels offense that’s scoring 36.8 ppg, third-most in the SEC and 12th in the nation. He previously coached Charlotte with Healy before joining Nick Saban at Alabama, then Ole Miss.

There is a question as to whether Charlotte can, or wants to, pay what would be willing to get a big-program coordinator in the fold. Poggi was making $1 million annually, which likely isn’t enough.

That opens the door for successful smaller-school coaches to take the next step.

Kerwin Bell has turned around Western Carolina’s moribund FCS program in short order. He won a Division II national title with Valdosta State and this could be considered the next logical step in an ascending career.

Similarly, Tre Lamb turned East Tennessee State into a Top 25 FCS program just one year after inheriting a three-win team, and previously turned Gardner-Webb around. Both are likely future head coaches at a higher level.

Former Carolina Panthers QB Chris Weinke is the co-offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, after stops at Tennessee, Alabama, and IMG Academy.

Other coaches with Charlotte connections could warrant a serious look, including Pep Hamilton, a Charlotte native who has more experience in the NFL and was even coach and GM of the UFL’s DC Defenders in 2020.

Retired UAB coach Bill Clark, South Carolina defensive coordinator Clayton White, NC State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson , and former Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator and head coach Steve Wilks
