There’s never been a better time for college football teams in need of a quarterback. Gone are the days of hoping that underwhelming quarterback prospects will take the magical leap next season. If the position isn’t settled, it’s time to go digging through an absolutely loaded group of quarterbacks in the transfer portal.

While the list of transfer QBs is long and diverse, few have already accomplished as much as Brennan Armstrong, who will have one year of eligibility remaining after announcing his intent to play a final season elsewhere after four record-setting years with the Cavaliers.

Armstrong is now Virginia’s all-time leading passer with 8,442 career yards and a school-record 58 touchdown passes. He also set single-season records in 2021 with 4,449 passing yards and 31 touchdowns and also contributed with his legs, racking up 20 total rushing touchdowns.

Teams in need of a proven veteran with plenty of upside remaining could do a whole lot worse, and there should be several schools in the hunt to land Armstrong for his final year. We've put together our college football futures odds for his potential destinations.

Circumstances are always fluid in college football, especially this time of year with hundreds joining the transfer portal and dozens of coaches on the move. That’s why recent developments have us convinced that North Carolina State is the college football betting favorite to land Armstrong for the 2023 season.

Wolfpack Leading for Armstrong

The Wolfpack are now reportedly set to hire Robert Anae as the new offensive coordinator. The long-time assistant coached Armstrong in his best seasons as the offensive coordinator at Virginia, and he’s making changes again after one season at Syracuse.

Armstrong was on an incredible trajectory under Anae, peaking as a junior in 2021 before what most assumed would be an epic final season with the Cavs. But production fell off under first-year coach Tony Elliott as the Cavs went 3-7 and it’s not surprising that Armstrong would want to give it one more year on the college gridiron with new surroundings.

Given what Armstrong already accomplished with Anae, it seems like a no-brainer that the two could team up and run it back in 2023 with the Wolfpack. North Carolina State has a need there with Devin Leary hitting the portal, and there’s still plenty of talent coming back after a strong 8-4 season in Raleigh.

Is Notre Dame It?

Notre Dame could be a wild card in the process. The Irish are definitely after a top-level quarterback and figure to have heavy interest in Armstrong, as well as Texas transfer Hudson Card and others.

If Armstrong is the No. 1 option, those gold helmets are always tempting. It’s possible he’s Plan B at the moment, but there’s a lot of dominos left to fall and no telling how these transfers will shake out. In terms of need and fit, Notre Dame is right there at the top.

Other Contenders

Other contenders for Armstrong figure to be Syracuse, Minnesota and Wisconsin. While Anae left the Orange program this week, they just promoted former quarterbacks coach Jason Beck to offensive coordinator. Beck was also on staff at Virginia and mentored Armstrong before he left after the 2021 season. It’s possible he could go after Armstrong again and he has a strong selling point given what they accomplished together.

Minnesota and Wisconsin both have a need at the position, and Armstrong originally committed to the Gophers out of high school before switching to Virginia. Perhaps he and coach P.J. Fleck could reunite in a rare chance to play the ‘what-if’ game for real.

Overall, Armstrong is one of the best quarterbacks out there and we’d be surprised if he didn’t find a great fit and thrive in 2023.
