In the land of college football betting, the dog is king. That’s why Bookies.com is teaming up with a different animal shelter each week throughout the season to share dogs in need of a loving home.

Our college football handicapper Dan Kilbridge will start by examining the college football spreads at sportsbooks and picking his favorite underdog to cover the spread or win straight up that week. We then connect with a shelter from that team’s campus to share one lovable dog who could complete your family huddle.

It’s all about cashing bets and rescuing pets with Dog of the Week.

It’s time for another loaded Saturday on the gridiron, and we’re looking at two tempting dogs this week – Michigan State is +6.5 at Miami on major betting apps and Fletcher is a 2 1/2-year-old mixed breed from East Lansing, Michigan who just needs a fair shake in the recruiting process.

The Pick: Michigan State +6.5 vs. Miami

Odds are current at publication. Betting sites may indicate odds changes closer to kickoff.

Michigan State players know when you put on that green and white jersey, you’re more than an athlete. You’re a “Spartan Dawg” for life. And the current group is growing up fast under second-year coach Mel Tucker.

Tucker hit the transfer portal hard all offseason and the Spartans are already getting serious results, particularly from former Wake Forest running back Kenneth Walker III. Walker set the tone with a 75-yard touchdown run on the first offensive play of the season at Northwestern, and he’s already up to 321 yards and five touchdowns on 30 carries.

Starting quarterback Payton Thorne is off to a solid start with 465 passing yards and five touchdowns, and there’s skill at receiver.

It’s been a long time since the Spartans have looked this capable on offense through two games, regardless of competition.

While Michigan State cruised to easy wins over Northwestern and Youngstown State, Miami has had to battle back-to-back weeks in a loss to No. 1 Alabama and a 25-23 win over Appalachian State. Now they’ll be in for another fight against a tough, physical opponent.

Tucker hasn’t had to really open up the playbook in those first two games and has definitely saved some new looks and twists for this matchup. Defensively the game plan will revolve around keeping Miami quarterback D’Eriq King in the pocket and limiting explosive plays.

We expect the Spartans to control time of possession, hit on big offensive plays and do a good enough job on defense to cover +6.5 and maybe win outright in Coral Gables.

The Pup: Fletcher

Fletcher is 45-pound mixed breed described as a total couch potato. In other words, he’s a perfect companion to chill with for Spartan games all season long. He’s currently in a foster home and looking to land a full-time scholarship offer.

Fletcher is neutered, microchipped and caught up on all vaccinations. You can find out more about Fletcher at the Capital Area Humane Society Website.

The Capital Area Humane Society is open for adoptions from 12-7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information, please call (517) 626-6060.
