College Football Playoff: Breaking Down The Rankings

Here's where the committee got it right and no-so-right.

Just Right

  • 1. Miami: The Hurricanes may be an undefeated ACC team, but perfection matters this season given the carnage elsewhere. Miami faces Notre Dame in South Bend Saturday.

Too High

  • 5. Alabama: The Tide are the highest-ranked two-loss team, ahead of Texas, BYU, Kentucky and LSU, on the strength of wins over South Carolina and Kentucky. That’s generous.
  • 11. Notre Dame: The Irish have zero wins over ranked teams, and this weekend’s game at Miami looks like a must-win for them.
  • 8. UCLA & 16. Wake Forest: Both lean on their records. Texas Tech and BYU have two ranked wins each, which is more than LSU, Notre Dame, UCLA and Wake Forest have combined.
  • 3. Utah: The Utes are unbeaten, but their only top-25 win is over Houston.

Too Low

  • 7. Texas: The Longhorns have the most ranked wins in the country, yet sit behind Alabama. CBS called that placement nonsensical.
  • 15. Texas Tech: The Big 12 hate is real. The Red Raiders have one loss and two ranked wins, but they’re just outside the cutline.
  • 9. BYU: More Big 12 hate. The Cougars have a stronger resume than several teams ahead of them.

Bubble: No team ranked outside the top 18 in a first CFP ranking has made the final bracket in the 12-team era, which hurts USC (20), Oregon (23) and Florida (24).

How To Earn A College Football Playoff Berth?

The College Football Playoff Selection Committee chooses the 12 teams that make the playoff. Committee membership consists of one member each from the 10 FBS conferences and the University of Notre Dame.

The Power 4 Conference (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC) champions are guaranteed bids this season. Those championship games take place during the first weekend in December.

One spot among the 12 teams is set aside for the best “Group Of 6” school. The “Group of 5” berth goes to the team determined to be the best from the American, CUSA, MAC, Pac-12, Mountain West, and Sun Belt.

Notre Dame gets an auto bid if it finishes in the top 12 ranked teams.

No specific formula exists to determine the 12 playoff berths. Committee members are free to use whatever data they choose. Among the factors considered are strength of schedule, head-to-head results against common opponents, and conference championships won.

Changes In The College Football Playoff

Last season, the CFB Playoff eliminated the automatic first-round bye for the four best conference champions. Now, the teams will be seeded based on their overall quality, with the best conference champion not making the top four, getting the 5th spot overall.

How Is The College Football Playoff Schedule Determined?

The No. 5-12 teams play in a first round with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds on campus. The selection committee, meanwhile, assigns the top four conference champions to Playoff Quarterfinals hosted by bowls. The committee considers historic bowl relationships and then rankings when assigning those games.

The two Playoff Semifinals will be played in bowl games, and a national championship game will be played in a different city every year, always on a Monday night.

Do Any Teams Automatically Qualify For The College Football Playoff?

No. The Committee evaluates each FBS team on performance. Just ask Notre Dame.

Where Will The National Championship Game Be Played?

Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas plays host to the 2026 National Championship Game on January 25. Future national championship games, meanwhile, take place at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans (2028), and Raymond James Stadium in Tampa (2029).
