Move over, Trevor Lawrence and Tua Tagovailoa: You’ve got company. LSU senior quarterback Joe Burrow surged up in the Heisman Trophy race this week after the Tigers’ 45-38 win at No. 12-ranked Texas. Now he’s gone from a deep darkhorse to serious contender as the college football betting season hits Week 3.

Draft Kings, SugarHouse and 888Sport list Burrow third at +800, ahead of Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts (+900) and third overall behind Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence (+350) and Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (+350). Fan Duel even has Burrow equal with Tagovailoa now at +500.

Burrow was barely on the Heisman radar this offseason after throwing for 2,894 yards with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2018. He’s on pace to do a lot more this season after lighting it up in back-to-back starts.

Burrow went for 278 yards and five touchdowns in the opener against Georgia Southern, but Saturday’s showing in Austin proved the Ohio native is for real. He completed 31 of 39 attempts – including 15 of 18 in a back-and-forth second half - for 471 yards and four touchdowns with one interception.

Burrow Schedule Could Boost Heisman Odds Further

Burrow will need to keep his foot on the gas in the coming weeks in order to stay put or move up in the race. The Tigers host 0-2 Northwestern State Saturday and travel to Vanderbilt in Week 4. Utah State then visits Death Valley ahead of a conference schedule that includes home games against No. 9-ranked Florida and No. 8-ranked Auburn. Burrow and Tagovailoa will meet head-to-head Nov. 9 at Alabama in what should be an epic clash with serious Heisman betting implications.

PointsBet still lists Hurts third at +700, one spot ahead of Burrow (+800). The Alabama transfer and current Oklahoma starting quarterback leads the nation in accuracy having completed 82.9 percent of his passes in the Sooners’ wins over Houston and South Dakota. He has six passing touchdowns with no turnovers and an additional three scores on the ground, rushing for 223 yards on 24 carries.

The Sooners travel to 0-2 UCLA Saturday night and currently have just one ranked team on the schedule, an Oct. 12 home date with No. 12-ranked Texas.

Tough Test Next For Lawrence

Lawrence remains the favorite across the board despite pedestrian numbers in Clemson’s first two games. He’s thrown for 436 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions as the Tigers began their national title defense with a 52-14 trouncing of Georgia Tech and Saturday’s 24-10 win over No. 16-ranked Texas A&M.

Unranked Syracuse should have Lawrence’s attention as he gets ready for this week’s game at the Carrier Dome, in which the Tigers are favored by 28. He got hurt and missed the second half against Syracuse last season as Clemson escaped with a 27-23 home win.
