The two College Football Playoff games couldn't have been more different for LSU and Clemson on Saturday. LSU beat Oklahoma in convincing fashion and Clemson had to scratch and claw to edge out a victory over Ohio State. Those two performances have seemingly had a significant impact on the college football betting line for the CFP Championship Game on Jan 13 in New Orleans.

As soon as the championship game was set, the LSU Tigers opened up as 2.5 to 3-point favorites according to most online sports betting sites and casinos. Since then, the line has moved up to 6.5 as the public is entirely behind LSU and star quarterback Joe Burrow.

William Hill reported that, as of Monday morning, 90 percent of the tickets and 95 percent of the money wagered on the point spread was on LSU to cover. The line could move even further toward LSU thanks to college football consensus betting before the game kicks off.

It also doesn’t hurt that LSU has been fantastic against the spread this season, covering or pushing in 11 of 14 games this season. And given how explosive the LSU offense has been over the past two months (averaging 51. 6 PPG over their last six games), it’s not hard to see why the public is backing the Tigers again this week. However, it is fascinating to see that the favorites have won just twice in five years in the National Championship game.

Clemson Tigers Thrive as Underdog

But the defending national champion Clemson Tigers don’t mind being an underdog. They’ve won four of their last five games as an underdog and have gone an incredible 8-1 against the spread in their last nine games when they haven’t been favored. It's also notable that Clemson is such a heavy underdog despite making the championship game for the fourth time in five seasons. They have won 29 straight games, including five straight wins against SEC opponents.

Clemson wasn’t quite as dominant this season as people might have anticipated, but the ACC champions covered the spread in 11 of their 14 games including the past five games. Clemson still has one of the best offenses in the league in college football with Trevor Lawrence at quarterback, but the Tigers also have the top-ranked defense, which could potentially slow LSU down. If nothing else, Clemson could prove to be a college football odds steal at +6.5 points in the championship game.

Though LSU is favored by nearly a touchdown, expect LSU and Clemson to deliver the highest quality of football considering the coaching staffs and quarterback play on each site. Continue to watch this line for movement over the next two weeks before kickoff.
