America’s favorite condiment-sponsored postseason bowl game is back, and we’ve got a sneaky-good college football betting matchup for the Duke’s Mayo Bowl at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Maryland will represent the Big Ten as a slight favorite having secured a second straight winning season under fourth-year coach Mike Locksley. North Carolina State is coming off a strong season of its own – the Wolfpack looked like title contenders early on and faded down the stretch, but there are some impressive wins on the schedule.

While NC State was hoping to be at this stadium a month ago for the ACC conference championship game, the Wolfpack will have to settle for a chance at back-to-back nine-win seasons. Maryland has a chance to get to eight wins on the year for the first time since 2010, and a second straight bowl win under Locksley could mean something to help keep momentum going in the offseason.

With Maryland betting apps legal and available since Thanksgiving, this represents a first opportunity for Terps fans to wager on their team in the postseason. Depending on how the legislative process goes in early 2023, there remains hope that North Carolina betting apps could be live by the end of next year.

Duke’s Mayo Bowl Point Spread Prediction

Bowl games have always been a little different from a handicapping perspective, but never anything like we’ve seen the past few years. The trend of players opting out to prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft is relatively new, but the transfer portal is the big game-changer with thousands of players declaring their intent to transfer ahead of bowl games.

Both teams will be without key personnel in this one, to the point that it might even out. That’s reflected in the betting line, with the Terrapins favored by -1 on Maryland betting sites

NC State has been without quarterback Devin Leary ever since he suffered a season-ending injury in early October. The Wolfpack went 2-3 from that point on and started three different quarterbacks in Leary’s absence. The offensive production fell off, but never to the point where the Wolfpack were a mess and unable to at least put a few drives together. But now they’ll also be without offensive coordinator Tim Beck, who took the head coaching job at Coastal Carolina.

Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa should be ready to go for the Terrapins, but it sounds like he’ll be without three wide receivers. The Terrapins also lose a few key pieces on defense.

NC State’s defense deserves respect in this spot and Tagovailoa will have his work cut out. But Maryland has more explosive-play potential on offense by a mile. The Terrapins were close to doing more this season, taking both Ohio State and Michigan down to the wire. It goes down as a pair of losses and nothing more on paper, but the Terrapins have skill and play with toughness, while NC State is facing a long offseason trying to figure things out at QB and elsewhere.

We’re on Maryland to win outright and cover -1.

Duke’s Mayo Bowl Over/Under Pick

Oddsmakers have the total hovering in the mid-to-high 40s on betting apps for this one. It could be the lowest total of the season for a Maryland game depending on where the line closes. And while the total for Terrapins’ games was often in the mid-60s and as high as 74 for the SMU game, the total fell Under in seven of 12 games.

NC State has won with defense all year and looks like the team that truly belongs in the Big Ten as opposed to Maryland. The total also went Under in seven of 12 Wolfpack games, and the Under hit in five of seven games in which Leary did not suit up.

We like Maryland to get it done behind a few big plays from Tagovailoa, but we don’t see the Terrapins moving the chains with consistency against a strong Wolfpack front seven.

We’re on Under 47.5.
