Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is no longer the lone betting favorite in the Heisman Trophy race.

The junior signal-caller is now even alongside LSU quarterback Joe Burrow with +150 odds at DraftKings after suffering a high ankle sprain Saturday during the Crimson Tide’s home win over Tennessee. Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts is third at +220 and Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is fourth at +1000. Tagovailoa had surgery Sunday and will miss Alabama’s next game Saturday against Arkansas. Coach Nick Saban issued the following statement Sunday morning.

“Tua Tagovailoa suffered a high-ankle sprain (Saturday) night against Tennessee. Our physicians performed a successful tight-rope procedure on his right ankle this morning. This is the same injury, but the opposite ankle that Tua injured last season. Tua will miss next week’s game against Arkansas, but we expect a full and speedy recovery.”

Tagovailoa was listed at +110 to win the Heisman last week, ahead of Burrow at +250. He completed 11 of 12 passes for 155 yards with an interception before getting knocked out of the game.

Burrow is now a Heisman betting odds co-favorite for the first time thanks to a 327-yard, four-touchdown day against Mississippi State. The senior, who’s up to 2,484 passing yards and 29 touchdowns, began the year around +2500 and serves as a reminder that there’s always preseason college football betting value.

Heisman Favorites Burrow, Tagovailoa Will Meet Nov. 9

LSU QB Joe Burrow has a clear path to the Heisman Trophy, which includes a game against Alabama on Nov. 9.

Alabama has a bye following the Arkansas game and Tagovailoa is expected to recover in time for a Nov. 9 home game against LSU. But the injury means there’s almost no chance he’ll be 100 percent physically while going head-to-head with Burrow in the most anticipated game of the year.

Burrow could be in control of the race by then, with the Tigers hosting No. 9-ranked Auburn Saturday in Baton Rouge. He’ll also have a chance to pad the stats on the back end of the schedule with LSU finishing the regular season against three unranked teams in Ole Miss, Arkansas and Texas A&M.

Hurts and Fields still have a chance to get back in the conversation as well, but it’s looking like a four-horse race. Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor saw his odds plummet from +900 to +2000 after the Badgers’ stunning loss Saturday at Illinois.

Tagovailoa’s odds now rest on his ankle as much as the Tide’s record. Burrow currently has the edge in accuracy, passing yards and total touchdowns. If Tagovailoa’s stats suffer upon return and Alabama and LSU finish with the same record, Burrow should get the nod.
