Rachael Blackmore is one of the most famous female sports stars on the planet right now. The top jockey has shattered the glass ceiling for female riders with her exploits in the past few years and continues to inspire a new generation of riders, both male and female, hoping to follow in her footsteps.
Blackmore was born in Killenaule, Co. Tipperary, Ireland, and took her first tentative steps towards becoming the most successful female National Hunt jockey when riding a horse for the first time at the tender age of two. Despite her family having no real horse background, Rachael continued her love affair with horses through her early life.
After a stint in pony racing, Blackmore began her career as an amateur jockey and enjoyed some success thanks mainly to the support of trainer Shark Hanlon, who had taken her under his wing. In fact, it was Hanlon who provided Blackmore with her first win as an amateur in February 2011, and it was he who suggested that the young jockey had the quality to turn professional.
In March 2015, Blackmore would do just that, having finished her amateur stint with 11 point-to-point winners in Ireland, and seven winners on the track. Hanlon again provided Blackmore with her first win as a pro, and in 2017 she recorded the first of many historical achievements when becoming the first female rider to win the Irish conditional riders’ championship.
In 2019, Rachael Blackmore firmly stamped her name on the racing world. After beginning a close partnership with Irish trainer, Henry de Bromhead, the pair would team up for two Cheltenham Festival winners, including a first Grade 1 winner for the jockey when Minella Indo won the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle much to the delight of punters who used their Cheltenham free bets on the selection.
The following year, Blackmore was in the winner’s enclosure at Cheltenham once again, this time on board the unbeaten mare, Honeysuckle, a horse with whom she was set to achieve amazing feats within the not-too-distant future.
In 2021, Blackmore enjoyed the most successful season of her career to date. It was her partnership with the aforementioned, Honeysuckle, that would provide the biggest Cheltenham Festival achievement for Blackmore, as she became the first female jockey to win the prestigious Champion Hurdle. Another landmark was achieved after Blackmore became the first woman to win the leading rider at the festival after recording a remarkable six wins across the four days.
One month later at Aintree, Blackmore made an even bigger breakthrough for female jockeys, this time becoming the first to win the world-famous Grand National in its 182nd running. This success catapulted her to not only more fame in the racing world but also across the sporting world as a whole. As a result, Blackmore was named RTE Sports Person of the Year and also took home the BBC World Sport Star of the Year award.
In 2022, Blackmore and Honeysuckle defended their Champion Hurdle crown, and in another first for female jockeys, Rachael became the first woman to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup on board the de Bromhead-trained A Plus Tard.
