In 2019, the Cincinnati Reds managed to win more than 69 games for the first time in six seasons. The Reds won 75 times -- not world-altering, but it was the most for them since 2014.

They followed it up with a memorable offseason that included adding a big bat for the cleanup spot and an on-base dynamo to lead off. In a wide-open National League Central, the Reds have joined the ranks as a contender.

Reds — Over 52.5 Winning Percentage (-110)

Wins aren’t going to come easily for the Reds. The NL Central is going to be tough, though the Brewers, on paper, look to be taking a step back and the Pirates are in the tank. The Cubs and Cardinals are the favored teams, but neither is a Dodgers-Yankees-Astros level powerhouse.

The Reds have as much talent this year as any other team in the division. Depth remains a bit of a concern, but if the bottom part of their order and their bullpen can just hold their own, there is enough there to compete and win more than they lose for the first time in a while. Luis Castillo — NL Cy Young Award (+2000)

Castillo figured it out in 2019. There was no sophomore slump in his second full seasons in the pros, as he lowered his ERA from 4.30 to 3.40 and increased his strikeout total by 61 in one more start.

Just as important in this shorter season, he was hot right out of camp before faltering. Through 10 starts, he was 5-1 with a 1.90 ERA. If he gets off to a similar start he’ll be in the mix. He should get more run support and, from the soundbites out of spring training, he learned a lot about his pitches in 2019 and is confident about his chances. Eugenio Suarez — Most Home Runs (+2500)

Last year, Suarez swung for the fences. It led to a league-leading 189 strikeouts. But it also led to 49 home runs and he still managed to hit .271 with 70 walks drawn.

Suarez’s HR total has increased fairly dramatically in each of his six MLB seasons. He jumped from 34 to 49 last year. Another leap of any kind and he’s a home run leader contender.
