Top Contenders For Alex Bregman In Free Agency 2026
Should Bregman opt out of his contract with the Red Sox as expected, here are some of the top contenders for his services.
First, a return to the Boston Red Sox seems more likely than him leaving the team, with the Red Sox leading the chase to sign him. Bregman proved to be a terrific fit for Boston when he was healthy, as he made the All-Star team this season for the third time in his career. The Red Sox love his bat and his Gold Glove, and will likely make him a generous contract offer to return.
The Chicago Cubs were rumored to be interested in Bregman last season before he signed with the Red Sox. The Cubs have rookie Matt Shaw at third base right now, but while Shaw had a solid rookie season overall, he had a below-average bat this year, and Bregman would be an upgrade for a Cubs team that is looking to win the World Series.
The Los Angeles Angels got decent production out of Yoan Moncada, but there is no doubt Bregman would be a massive upgrade with both his bat and his glove. The Angels haven't made the playoffs in over a decade and are expected to be buyers in free agency this winter.
Speaking of missing the playoffs, the New York Mets also missed the postseason despite having a monster payroll. We know that Mets owner Steve Cohen is willing to spend in free agency, so it would make sense for the Mets to sign another big bat, such as Bregman, to help the team out.
The Detroit Tigers are one of the best teams in MLB, but they can always upgrade. They were one of the finalists last year to sign Bregman before he went to the Red Sox, and it's expected they will give his agent a call this offseason to see if he is willing to help take their team over the top.

The San Francisco Giants already have Gold Glove player Matt Chapman at third base, but they could potentially sign Bregman and move him to another position. They missed the playoffs this year and are expected to make some big moves in free agency.
The Toronto Blue Jays are one of baseball's best teams, but Bregman would be an upgrade over Addison Barger at third base. Still, they are a long shot to sign him.
