Max Scherzer is a three-time Cy Young Award winner, an eight-time All-Star, and a two-time 20-game winner who’s led the league in strikeouts three times and WAR twice.
But he’s also 40 years of age, coming off a season in which he made only nine starts. As Spring Training approaches, and most players are locked into the MLB teams for the coming season, Scherzer is still on the market.
Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has revealed his MLB odds as to which team adds Scherzer before MLB Opening Day 2025.
Team | Odds | Probability (%) |
---|---|---|
Boston Red Sox | +375 | 21.1 |
Toronto Blue Jays | +400 | 20.0 |
New York Mets | +450 | 18.2 |
Chicago Cubs | +500 | 16.7 |
New York Yankees | +750 | 11.8 |
Philadelphia Phillies | +1000 | 9.1 |
Atlanta Braves | +1150 | 8.0 |
Los Angeles Dodgers | +1400 | 6.7 |

Contenders Line Up for Veteran Ace
Scherzer still has something left in the tank, if his January workout session was any indication. “He looked like Max Scherzer,” remarked one onlooker.
The Toronto Blue Jays have been talking with Scherzer’s representatives for months, but no deal has been signed. It’s possible Scherzer, who has earned more than $300 million in his long career, may take a slight pay cut to play on a World Series contender.
That opens the door for the New York Mets and New York Yankees, plus the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers, all of whom had scouts at Scherzer’s workout.
The Yankees, Braves, and Dodgers, along with the Philadelphia Phillies, in no particular order, probably have four of the top-five rotations entering Spring Training. Scherzer could go elsewhere and help bolster a lineup into the next level.
The Boston Red Sox added Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler to 2025’s rotation, a massive boost from last year. Adding Scherzer could really take Boston back into postseason consideration. The Sox payroll is about $30 million lower in 2025 than it was for last season.
The Chicago Cubs payroll is roughly $50 million lighter. They have a young rotation of up-and-comers, good enough that it’s already pegged around 10th overall in some early rankings. Scherzer offers a boost of not just production, but guidance to the green crew.
