Pitching legend Max Scherzer is still unsigned as spring ramps up, and the biggest reason is simple: he’s not rushing. Scherzer has indicated he’s willing to wait past Opening Day if the right opportunity doesn’t present itself, which keeps this market unusually fluid.
Scherzer could sign with a new team in the coming weeks, potentially an item of interest at sports betting sites. Bookies.com has put together hypothetical Max Scherzer next team odds for where he could wind up next.

The Blue Jays continue to surface in reunion chatter after his 2025 World Series run in Toronto, while the San Francisco Giants remain a frequent fit in rumor conversations. Plus, if Scherzer truly waits for an injury-created opening, a Detroit Tigers homecoming angle still lingers in the background.
Toronto Blue Jays (+325)
The Toronto Blue Jays signed Max Scherzer last year. He rewarded them by helping the Jays reach the World Series for the first time in 22 years as the right-handed pitcher played a significant role in the team's deep playoff run. After losing in Game 7 to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Jays signed Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce to replace Scherzer and Chris Bassitt in the rotation. But Bowden Francis went down with a season-ending injury, so the Jays’ starting depth is being tested. Money is not an issue for Toronto, so signing Scherzer for another season makes a lot of sense if they want to improve their depth for another World Series run. At DraftKings Sportsbook, the Jays have -280 odds to make the postseason in 2026, as opposed to +225 odds that they miss out.
San Francisco Giants (+450)
The San Francisco Giants have been heavily linked to acquiring a veteran starter in free agency this year, but they didn’t sign a big name. After Justin Verlander signed with the Detroit Tigers instead, the Giants could turn to Scherzer to join the rotation as the Giants aim for a return to the postseason.
San Diego Padres (+750)
The San Diego Padres have had a very good team for several years, but they keep coming up short in trying to win a World Series. San Diego has a solid rotation and has a history of signing veterans during Spring Training to compete for jobs. However, Scherzer would undoubtedly be an improvement and an excellent signing. Plus, the weather is great, so Scherzer could do far worse than joining the Padres for what might be his last season.
Detroit Tigers (+900)
The Detroit Tigers were Scherzer’s home from 2010 to 2014. He won his first Cy Young Award for them in 2013 and was a member of their 2012 AL champions (his first of four World Series appearances with four different teams). The Tigers are gunning for the World Series this year and they already brought back another franchise legend in Justin Verlander. A reunion with Scherzer for their rotation, along with Verlander and two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, could make them favorites to win the American League. At BetMGM Sportsbook, Detroit has +900 odds to win the pennant, fifth on the operator’s board.
Philadelphia Phillies (+1000)
The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the favorites to win the National League. After they lost All-Star Ranger Suarez to the Boston Red Sox in free agency, they could surely use another starter. Scherzer would be a terrific fit for a veteran-laden squad that’s gunning for the World Series.
New York Mets (+1100)
The New York Mets signed Scherzer in 2022, then traded him in 2023 to the Texas Rangers, where he won his second World Series ring. Though things didn’t work out the first time he was in New York, the Mets are a high-spending team and could surely use another veteran like Scherzer to help strengthen their starting rotation. Customers at FanDuel Sportsbook can get +1300 odds on the Mets to win the World Series.
Arizona Diamondbacks (+1300)
Scherzer made his MLB debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2008. The D-backs likely have their rotation locked up after re-signing Zac Gallen, but if they want to bring in another veteran starter, then Scherzer would be an excellent addition.
The Field (+650)
Scherzer turned 41 in July, but he proved in the 2025 World Series that he’s still a big-game pitcher. The Field (any team not listed above) is a viable possibility. Sportsbook apps often list “the field” as an option in wagering, but these Max Scherzer next team odds odds are exclusive to Bookies.com.
