Who are the Early HR Derby Favorites?
Cody Bellinger
Looking at how Bellinger has started this 2019 season, it’s not surprise why he’s a lead candidate for the Home Run Derby.
It’s not shocking he’s a top MVP candidate either.
He’s leading the majors in Batting Average (.405), WAR (4.6), On-Base percentage (.485), Slugging percentage (.791), and RBI (44).
One thing to keep in mind, however, is that Bellinger has established himself as the top producer on a World Series contender.
That means there’s a chance he could turn down a spot in the Derby in order to avoid the perceived post-Derby second-half curse that some competitors endure.
Christian Yelich
What is there to say about Christian Yelich that hasn’t already been said?
The reigning NL MVP got off to just about the best start anyone could have imagined and he leads MLB in dingers with 19 (two more than Bellinger).
In the tight NL Central, he’s kept the Brewers close to or around the top and for that reason is another candidate to turn down an offer he’ll absolutely receive to hit in the Derby.
Add in the fact he’s looking at a serious chance to win back-to-back MVP’s and it only adds to the case against him batting.
But, of course, the decision will ultimately be his and should he compete, he’ll likely be the first or second favorite when the field is announced.
Joey Gallo
Gallo is a perfect candidate for the Home Run Derby.
His Texas Rangers are two games under .500 and could potentially climb into contention, but the AL West appears in the early going to be Houston’s division to lose.
With the rest of the American League as competitive as ever, if things stay the way they are in Arlington, Gallo will likely opt to improve his brand and accept an invite to the Derby.
He has 13 homers to his name with only George Springer (17), and Alex Bregman (14) besting him in the American League so far.
Having never hit in a Derby, he’ll probably want to put his vaunted power to the test on the biggest stage at the Midsummer Classic.
