The New York Yankees were -500 to make the 2023 MLB Playoffs. But an offense full of promise is going to finish in the bottom five in runs scored and batting average, and the Yankees’ six-year run on postseason appearances is over.

Missing the postseason isn’t something the Yankees are accustomed to, and this season was a blow that could rattle the front office down to the minors.

Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has created the MLB future odds as to when the Yankees will return to the American League Playoffs.

What Went Wrong for New York?

The Yankees were +800 to win the 2023 World Series; only the Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, and Los Angeles Dodgers had equal or better odds in the preseason. Instead, the Yankees and rival Boston Red Sox wrap up the regular season battling to avoid finishing last in the AL East.

Once again, injuries thwarted offensive efforts. Star sluggers Aaron Judge (101 games), Anthony Rizzo (99), and Giancarlo Stanton (98) were unavailable for large swaths of the year. Only two pitchers started 20 games.

And so, the team with MLB’s second-highest payroll, a massive $279 million, will miss the playoffs. (So, too, did the team with the No. 1 and No. 3 payrolls, the Mets and Padres.)

General manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone have admitted they’re unsure of their futures with the legendary franchise following the failure of not just this season but without a World Series appearance since 2009.

But what we do know is the Yankees don’t rebuild. They reload. Before a single free agent is on the market, the Yankees rank No. 3 in payroll for the 2024 season, No. 1 for 2025, and No. for 2026. The pinstripes aren’t going anywhere.

Judge, Stanton and Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole return for 2024. While keeping outfielders healthy was a concern all season, the Yankees have three of the top 100 minor league standouts waiting, and all are OFs. Spencer Jones, Jasson Rodriguez and Everson Pereira. Pereira and Rodriguez were late call-ups who should stick and offer youth to an aging Yankees lineup.
