Donovan Mitchell is having another All-Star worthy season for the Cleveland Cavaliers. But future plans may overtake the needs of the present.

With most NBA insiders agreeing Mitchell has no intention in invoking his player option for 2025-26, the Cavs are thinking about making the franchise-altering decision of trading their top player for a king's ransom.

Playoff-hungry, or championship-hungry, teams will inquire if a one of the NBA's premier shooting guards with 2.5 years of contract remaining is on the block.

Bookies.com NBA veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has revealed his projected NBA futures odds for Donovan Mitchell’s next team.

Nearly every team could find a spot in the rotation for Mitchell, a four-time NBA All-Star who may be just entering his prime.

Through 22 games of the 2023-24 NBA season, Mitchell is averaging 27.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.8 steals and 0.5 blocks per game. Aside from points, all those other categories would represent career-highs.

The Cavs are hovering just above .500, but recent injuries to the teams' Nos. 2 and 3 producers, Evan Mobley (out until February) and Darius Garland (out until mid-January) have team management wondering if there is another, longer-term avenure worth exploring.

The New York Knicks aren't in dire need of a point guard, with Jalen Brunson playing well. But they could use an upgrade at shooting guard, with Donte DiVincenzo (9.3 ppg) manning the spot for now. Mitchell ranks as the No. 2 in the NBA in shooting guard power rankings, behind only Devin Booker. The Knicks made it pretty clear their interest in Mitchell when he was available in a trade with the Jazz two years ago, and all the connections are there to make it happen. The feeling is probably mutual for the New York-area native.

More important for the Cavaliers: New York has a cache of first-round draft picks available to move, up to four in 2024 alone. If the Knicks want to pair RJ Barrett and Mitchell and finally make a run at relevance for the first time in decades, they can. That's why they are our NBA betting frontrunners for Mitchell at this moment in time.

The Knicks lead the pack, but some NBA insiders believe the Brooklyn Nets won't go down without a fight. The Nets have nearly as much draft capital to dangle, and perhaps a few key players if could add to the mix.

Those two teams, says ESPN NBA expert Brian Windhorst, have the best shot at signing Mitchell to an extension, so it gives them the edge in pulling a massive move.

The Miami Heat don’t have that kind of trade capital, but they do have Tyler Herro and up to three first-rounders, in addition to other available players. They’ve also made it clear they’re very interested in pairing Mitchell and Jimmy Butler together. That could push them over the Milwaukee Bucks or any other team as Eastern Conference favorites.

Windhorst also indicated two teams in the NBA Southwest division that would reach out about Mitchell. The New Orleans Pelicans are hungry for success with a healthy Zion Williamson finally in the fold. They own at least two first-round draft picks in each of the next four years. Perhaps no team is better suited to make a move and make a title run than New Orleans.

The Houston Rockets are likely interested as well. They spent big in free agency this off-season to get back on track as a franchise, but are graded as the NBA's worst team at the shooting guard position.

The Field includes other teams that should have cap space and a desire to lock in a star via a trade in the near future, including the Toronto Raptors, Memphis Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs.
