Lauri Markkanen has been transformed into a go-to standout in his two seasons with the Utah Jazz. Now the Jazz may sell high and move the Finnish forward for a king’s ransom. Teams are reportedly inquiring about the availability of Markkanen, and the Jazz are taking those calls.

NBA picks for Lauri Markkanen's potential new team are generating buzz as trade rumors heat up for the upcoming season

The Jazz seem to be torn between building around Markkanen, and building around all the players that trading Markkanen could bring in. Over the last two seasons, the 7-foot forward has become a player who could lead a team. 

After four seasons in Chicago and one in Cleveland, Markkanen joined the Jazz for 2022-23 and averaged 25.6 points and 8.6 rebounds, earning an All-Star spot and winning the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award. Last season, the numbers dipped slightly (23.2 ppg, 8.2 RPG).

But the Jazz also finished just 31-51 this season, well out of the running in a deep Western Conference. 

The Sacramento Kings were going hard for Markkanen until pivoting and acquiring DeMar DeRozan. The Kings may not be done, and adding Markkanen to play with DeRozan, De’Aaron Fox, and Domantas Sabonis turns the Kings into a legit Western Conference contender in quick order. 

The Golden State Warriors have put in a “substantial offer” for Markkanen. But it’s considered mostly picks-based, and the Warriors don’t have an array of good picking in the coming years. 

The Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs have shown interest in Markkanen, as well as other trade options, in an effort to take a next step in 2024-25. As options have dwindled, teams such as the Heat and Spurs may not find another quick-fix option. 

The Minnesota Timberwolves and New Orleans Pelicans have go-to big men in Karl-Anthony Towns and Zion Williamson, respectively. Minnesota could consider a trade involving KAT, while the Pels are hoping to maximize their potential while Zion is still under contract. 

The Pelicans already acquired Dejounte Murray from the Hawks, but still have Bradnon Ingram as a big trade chip, if the Jazz are interested in signing him to a long-term deal instead. 

Meanwhile, the Hawks could be in for a full revamp. They’ve traded Murray, and PG Trae Young could be next. The Jazz reportedly had prior interest in both Murray and Young. Maybe now is the time for a star swap.
