The 32 NHL teams will travel more than 1.3 million miles during the 2025-26 season while crossing 1,051 time zones.

Bookies.com examined the full 1,312-game, 2025-26 regular-season schedule and determined the miles traveled for each team by measuring the distance between the coordinates of each NHL arena using the haversine formula, which considers the curvature of the Earth. The data was compiled using AI platforms ChatGPT and Microsoft's Copilot.

The Edmonton Oilers travel the most miles of any NHL team this upcoming season. Their 14 road trips cover 54,425.6 miles. The team crosses 36 time zones.

The New York Islanders travel the fewest miles of any NHL team this season – 28,477.3 miles through 20 time zones.

NHL Schedule Analysis: Season Begins Oct. 7

The NHL season begins at 5 p.m. on October 7 when the Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers play host to the Chicago Blackhawks at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise. The Oilers visit Sunrise on Nov. 22 in a rematch of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final.

Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals open at home against the Boston Bruins on October 8. Despite retirement rumors this offseason, Ovechkin seeks to add to his all-time NHL goals record this season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators face off in Sweden for a pair of games on Nov. 14-16 in Stockholm. Those teams will travel 8261.24 miles and 9,161.66 miles, respectively, for the privilege. Stockholm sits 6 hours ahead of Pittsburgh and 7 hours ahead of Nashville.

The Long Skate: Edmonton's 7,114.4-Mile Round Trip

Edmonton owns the longest road trip without leaving North America this season. It's a 7,117.4-mile trip that takes the team from Philadelphia to Florida with stops at Columbus, Carolina, Buffalo, and Tampa Bay in between.

The shortest road trip in the NHL features the 29-mile round journey the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers take when they face each other in Newark and at Madison Square Garden.

The NHL schedule includes two games and an 18-day break in February for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. The Games include NHL players for the first time since 2014.

All 32 teams will be playing on Oct. 11 and Oct. 28. The games on Oct. 28 will be spread out, starting with the Penguins at the Philadelphia Flyers at 6 p.m. ET and concluding with the Kings at the San Jose Sharks at 11 p.m. ET.

The Thanksgiving Showdown features two Original Six teams with the Rangers visiting the Bruins on Nov. 28.

NHL Moves Outdoors In Florida

The Rangers and Panthers head outdoors for the 2026 Discover NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 2 at Miami’s loanDepot Park. The Boston Bruins then play the Tampa Bay Lightning at Raymond James Stadium on Feb. 1.

The NHL has special plans to keep the ice fresh for both games in the Sunshine State. They will be played at night. The roof will be opened at loanDepot Park for the puck drop.

Meanwhile, in Tampa, the NHL plans to build the ice surface under a temporary covering and remove it in the hours leading up to the game.

The NHL Olympic break runs from Feb. 5 to Feb. 25.
