The History Of The Sports Equinox

The first sports equinox was on October 17, 1971. That day, the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the host Baltimore Orioles 2-1 to win Game 7 of the World Series. The afternoon affair was over in just 2 hours and 10 minutes. 

The NFL that day saw Archie (he’s Arch’s grandfather) Manning and the lowly New Orleans Saints upset the eventual Super Bowl VI champion Dallas Cowboys 24-14 at Tulane Stadium.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (25 points) and Oscar Robertson (18) led the Milwaukee Bucks to an easy 127-94 win at Portland in one of three NBA games that day.

Finally, in the NHL, six games took place on that Sunday. Among the NHL Hall of Famers in action: Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Bobby Hull, Ken Dryden, Guy Lafleur, Guy Lapointe, and Brad Park.

When Was The Last Sports Equinox?

The last Sports Equinox occurred on October 28, 2024.

MLS play added to the menu. Notably, all four New York teams that played that day lost: Yankees, Knicks, Giants and NYCFC. (There’s one MLS game on Monday, as well, as Minnesota visits Seattle.) The Dodgers beat the Yankees 4-2 to take a 3-0 lead in the Fall Classic.

Pancho Banchero scored 50 points for Orlando in its 119-115 over the Pacers, and Nikola Jokic went for 40 points in Denver’s OT win over Toronto.
