A handful of PGA Tour players returned to action this week in the Scottsdale Open mini-tour event at Talking Stick Golf Club in Arizona. An unknown golf betting longshot ended up stealing the show in Thursday’s final round.
Zach Smith entered the Outlaw Tour tournament with 500-1 odds to win the whole thing. The 24-year-old shot 8-under 62 in the third and final round to win the tournament and pull off the spectacular betting upset. He finished on top of the leaderboard at 18 under, three shots ahead of runner-up Carson Roberts.
Smith won $20,000 by capturing the event. Had you bet $40 on him, you would have equaled his payday.
24-year-old Zach Smith shoots a final-round 62 to win the @ScottsdaleOpen and $20K. Started the week as a 500/1 longshot per @golfodds. @ColtKnost finishes T-3, @Joel_Dahmen T-8. Kudos @acaseofthegolf1 for stream coverage.

Smith has competed mostly on mini-tours since graduating from UC Santa Barbara, where in 2019 he became the first player in program history to qualify for the NCAA Championship. He certainly wasn’t known outside of the most serious golf circles before the Scottsdale Open.
A Rare Achievement
The 500-1 longshot victory is extremely rare in any sport, even on obscure golf tours – all previous winners on the Outlaw Tour this season had odds of 18-1 or better.
Betting favorite and PGA Tour winner Joel Dahmen had 5-1 odds and finished T-8 at 11-under. Fellow PGA Tour pro Kevin Streelman was second with 12-1 odds and finished T-10 at 10-under.
The PGA Tour is still on hiatus due to coronavirus but plans to return without fans June 11-14 for the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas. There are also two upcoming charity events, with Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy playing a skins match against Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff Sunday at Seminole Golf Club in Florida.
Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning are teaming up against Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady for another charity match May 24 at Medalist Golf Club in Florida.
