Knicks vs. Hawks Game 1: Series Preview

The matchup nobody in New Jersey expected and the one every Knicks fan should have been preparing for. Atlanta finished 46-36 and earned the No. 6 seed by going on an extraordinary run after the All-Star break, posting a 22-9 record from February 1 onward and overtaking four teams to reach the postseason for the first time since 2023. They traded Trae Young to the Wizards mid-season and never looked back.

New York, on the other hand, has been here before. The Knicks are back in the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year, have reached the conference semifinals three straight times, and finished 53-29. The franchise's best record since 2012-13. Under new head coach Mike Brown, the Brunson-Towns duo has evolved, with Karl-Anthony Towns posting a league-leading 56 double-doubles this season.

The head-to-head record matters. The Knicks went 2-1 against Atlanta this season, including a 128-125 road win on December 27 where Brunson dropped 34 points and KAT went for 36 and 15. In their most recent meeting on April 6, New York won 108-105 on the road, with Brunson leading with 30 points. The only loss came on January 2, when KAT sat out due to illness. The Brunson-KAT combination combined for 11.6 extra points above their season averages in those Atlanta matchups. That trend is not a coincidence.

Atlanta's path here required going 22-9 against mostly non-playoff competition. Of the 22 wins in that stretch, only four came against winning teams not in the play-in tournament — and they went 2-2 in those. The Hawks also chose to rest starters in their final game, flipping seeds to avoid Toronto. They got New York instead. That is not a favorable development for Quin Snyder's squad.
