The former top-ranked high school quarterback in the class of 2024 is officially on the move, as Florida Gators gunslinger DJ Lagway officially entered the transfer portal over the weekend, ending a two-year run in Gainesville where he threw for 4,179 yards and 28 touchdowns across 24 games played.

To get a sense of where the former five-star recruit will suit up next fall across the college football landscape, Bookies.com compiled hypothetical odds on which team Lagway will play for in 2026, with transfer hotspots like Miami and Texas Tech among the top landing spots out of the gate.

Where Will DJ Lagway Play Next?

After an up-and-down stretch at UF, Lagway will opt for a fresh start in 2026, with the leading contenders for his services being the Baylor Bears of the Big 12 at +475, followed by the Hurricanes and Red Raiders at +650 apiece.

Other schools that could be in play for Lagway include Lane Kiffin’s LSU Tigers (+800), as well as the Clemson Tigers and USC Trojans (+1100 each), while Lagway’s former head coach (Billy Napier) rounds out the list, with the James Madison Dukes coming in at +1500 this time around.

Two years ago, Lagway’s recruiting path saw him pick Florida over Baylor and SEC programs like Alabama and Arkansas, though Bears head coach Dave Aranda might have a better shot at landing him this time around.

What we know for sure is that Lagway’s time in Gainesville has come to an end, with the 2023 Mr. Texas Football recipient looking for a change of scenery now that Napier’s been shown the door and former Troy Trojans and Tulane Green Wave head coach Jon Sumrall is in charge of the Gators program.

What Can Lagway Do For New Team?

While Lagway’s overall record this year was far from pretty, going 4-8 after an 8-4 run last fall, he did manage to put together what might have been his best start to date in the team’s 40-21 win over Florida State on Nov. 29.

That’s when the sophomore threw for three touchdowns and hit on 62.5% of his passes for 168 yards in the Gators’ home romp over the Seminoles, potentially serving as a sign of what he’s capable of in a new system next season.

Coming home to Texas and playing for the Bears could do just that for Lagway, with Baylor QB Sawyer Robertson throwing for 306.8 yards per game and 31 touchdowns overall in 12 games, serving as a sign of what the Big 12 stalwart’s offense can do with a competent quarterback in tow.

Then again, Kiffin’s time in Oxford has shown him to be a master of the portal, with this year’s historic, 11-1 campaign fueled by Division II transfer QB Trinidad Chambliss, who threw for 3,016 yards and 18 touchdowns (to three interceptions) while adding six scores on the ground for the Rebels after going 14-2 with 3,279 yards and 31 touchdowns with Ferris State in 2023 and 2024.

Prior to that, Kiffin leaned on USC transfer QB Jaxson Dart to lead Ole Miss to consecutive double-digit-win seasons in 2023 and 2024, with Dart throwing for 10,617 yards and 72 touchdowns across 39 games with the Rebels from 2022 to 2024.

The Trojans of USC have ridden a similar narrative in Tinseltown, with Lincoln Riley using transfer QB Caleb Williams to guide the team to a 11-3 campaign in which the former Oklahoma star won the Heisman Trophy in 2022, while this year’s 9-3 team was guided by UNLV transfer QB Jayden Maiava, who threw for 3,431 yards and 23 touchdowns in his first year as the team’s full-time starter.

Whichever program lands Lagway out of the transfer portal is getting a quarterback that’s shown himself more than capable of performing on the sport’s biggest stage, with a host of coaches hoping the rising junior signal caller will join their rosters as the calendar flips over to 2026 in the coming weeks.
