FanDuel Bet Protect+ Launch Sets Off Social Media Spat Between Dave Portnoy, Will Compton

The launch of FanDuel Bet Protect+ triggered an old-school sports betting social media feud with Boston-based DraftKings thanks to Dave Portnoy. FanDuel Bet Protect+ allows bettors to protect against in-game injuries throughout a full game - for a 3% fee.
A day after FanDuel unveiled its new product - Barstool Sports President and DraftKings marketing partner Portnoy took to social media to deride the move.
Portnoy dropped six "Alerts" in a video in mocking his partner's newest offering.
Breaking News - Fanduel now charges for injury insurance. Our partners at @DraftKings offers it for free. If your player gets hurt in the 1st half we protect you. Why? Cause this is America. That’s why. #dkpartner - Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente)
"A little birdie just flew all the ways to the Keys," Portnoy said in a video from his Florida home. "DraftKings gives you free early exit. If your player gets hurt in the first half, all parlays, all props, they are refunded. FanDuel is charging you for this service. You pay money for this. You are a moron if you're not using our friends at DraftKings"
That clip amassed 1.8 million impressions on X.
FanDuel marketing partner and former NFL linebacker Will Compton responded. After mocking Portnoy's "birdie" alert, Compton said. "there are some TikTok influencers out there spreading bad information out there to confuse people" in a 2:10 response.
Breaking news —the #1 Sportsbook in 🇺🇸 (@FDSportsbook) protects customers for the ENTIRE GAME. Others like draft queens & fantics offer “free” insurance for the 1st half (cheap protection that disappears at halftime is exposure sold at a discount) - Will Compton (@_willcompton)

Portnoy got the last word, posting the following in reply to Compton's video:
Checks notes…FANDUEL (not an American company) charges 3% for injury insurance. YAY FOR THE BIG GAMBLING INSURANCE COMPANIY THAT CHARGES YOU INSURANCE SO THEY CAN INCREASE PROFITS AT EXPENSE OF CUSTOMERS!!!! (I will not mention CTE because it’s below me) - Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente)
Sports Betting Battles Lost In Shadow Of Prediction Markets
This sort of sports betting brand hostility had recently been shoved aside into the dustbin of history. That's thanks to the current "Godzilla vs. King Kong" Old Testament conflict between prediction markets Kalshi and Polymarket.
"Injury Insurance" as been a point of contention among DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics. Each offers some sort of protection against injuries that occur in the first half or first quarter of a game - depending on the sport.
One industry insider told Bookies.com that it may be a sign that DraftKings (and possibly Fanatics) felt the need to respond to what FanDuel did. The two operators remain in a cage match for bragging rights in terms of the U.S. sports betting market. Both sites last year launched prediction-market products. And both offer sports-related trades in markets where they cannot legally operate as a sports book.

What Is FanDuel Bet Protect+
Bet Protect+ allows bettors to insure player prop wagers against in-game injuries, offering a more comprehensive and user-controlled alternative to traditional “safety net” promos.
Bet Protect+ is available directly within the FanDuel Sportsbook app and applies to eligible player prop bets for 3% of the wager. For example, a $10 bet would cost an additional $0.30 to insure. If the selected player exits the game due to injury at any point, the protection kicks in. Straight bets are refunded in cash — not site credit — while parlays have the affected leg removed, with payouts recalculated accordingly.
The key differentiator is full-game coverage. Historically, sportsbooks have offered limited injury protection, often tied to promotions that only apply if a player is injured in the first quarter or first half. And those are typically paid out in bonus bets. FanDuel said its approach is broader and more transparent. And that it reflects internal data that shows a significant portion of injuries occur later in games, particularly in the second half.
Bet Protect+ 'Feature Is Entirely Optional'
The feature is entirely optional and presented clearly within the bet slip. It allows users to decide on a wager-by-wager basis whether the added protection is worth the cost. According to FanDuel, this opt-in structure was designed to preserve overall pricing and promotional value across the platform, rather than subsidizing blanket protections through reduced odds or fewer incentives elsewhere.
Bet Protect+ launched April 18 with NBA betting pregame and live player props, with expansion to other sports expected. The company says early customer feedback played a key role in shaping the feature, with many bettors — particularly more experienced ones. They expressed a willingness to pay for full-game protection over partial, promotional coverage.
FanDuel says Bet Protect+ represents a shift toward giving bettors more control over risk management. It flips what has traditionally been a sportsbook-driven perk into a customizable feature within the betting experience.
