March Madness Picks & Best Bets 2026 NCAA Tournament - Sweet 16 & Elite Eight (March 27)

The Road To Indianapolis continues Friday with the first round of the Sweet 16. We had another night of thrills on Thursday. This year, March Madness ends in April with the National Championship Game on April 6. After checking the latest college basketball odds, be sure to check our March Madness Picks & Best Bets below as the tournament continues.

Recent NCAA Tournament history has been very kind to No. 1 seeds.

In all, 17 of the past 25 and 7 of the past 8 national champions were No. 1 seeds. The most recent exception was Connecticut in 2023. Those Huskies entered the tournament as a No. 4 seed. Of course, UConn proceeded to win back-to-back national titles as Danny Hurley kept the bulk of his team intact.

Want a bigger dog than the 2023 Huskies – in terms of seeding – to win a national title? You’ll have to go back to the 2014 UConn Huskies. Those pups were a No. 7 seed before running the table and cutting down the nets at Jerry World. Those Huskies were +9500 to win the Tournament.

Three No. 3 seeds have won the Tourname since 2000, and one No. 2 seed has won during that time.

March Madness Picks & Best Bets: Game-By-Game Predictions

Here are our March Madness Picks & Best Bets for the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight. All betting lines via OddsJam.

South Region - Elite Eight

Saturday - Houston

3 Illinois vs. 9 Iowa
6:09 p.m. | TBS/truTV
Illinois -6.5 (-110)
Illinois -290
Iowa +245
O/U 137.5/138.5

Best Bet: Iowa +6.5 (-102)  (FanDuel via OddsJam). A Big Ten Showdown/Rematch offers a ticket to the Final Four for the victor. Illinois beat Iowa 75-69 on Jan. 11 and easily covered as 1.5-point road favorites. Brad Underwood's Illini ruined the House Party with solid 65-55 win over "host" Houston Thursday night. They beat the best defensive team in the country at their own game — grinding, rebounding, and refusing to let Houston establish any rhythm. The total on that game was a gimme on the under at 139.5 points. Both teams have leaned on defense to get here. Iowa upset No. 1-seed and defending national champion Florida before striking midnight on Nebraska 77-71. The Hawkeyes have covered in each of their three March Madness wins. Every single one of their victories has come through controlled, grinding, slow-possession basketball where they've survived late drama. (See: Beating Florida in Tampa on a near-last-second 3-pointer.) Illinois is the worst possible matchup for that style. The Illini are massive, they dominate the glass, they score in the paint relentlessly, and their defensive length will make Bennett Stirtz's life miserable — just like the regular-season game showed. Still, the Hawkeyes keep this close enough for the cover as The Big Dance clock strikes Midnight in Iowa City.

West Region - Elite Eight

Saturday - San Jose

1 Arizona vs 2 Purdue
8;49 p.m. | TBS/truTV
Arizona -6.5
Arizona -270
Purdue +220
O/U 151.5/152.5

Best Bet: Arizona -6.5 (-105)  (DraftKings via OddsJam). Arizona plays the full 40 without hesitation or quarter. The Wildcats smoked the Arkansas Razorbacks 109-88 Thursday night, crushing the number as 8.5-point favorites. Purdue, meanwhile, needed a virtual buzzer-beater to hold off a worn-down Texas squad 79-77, missing the 6.5-point number. This is a No. 1 vs a No. 2 on paper only. Purdue makes it competitive through the first half, but Arizona's depth, athleticism, and paint dominance wear the Boilermakers down in the second half. The Wildcats finally break through to their first Final Four since 2001, cut down the regional nets. The nation's best team takes another step toward fulfilling its destiny.

East Region - Sweet 16

Friday - Washington, D.C.

1 Duke vs. 5 St. John's
7:10 p.m. | CBS
Duke
-6.5 (-110)
Duke ML -258
St. John's ML +210
O/U 141.5

Best Bet: St. John's +6.5 (FanDuel via OddsJam). Dylan Darling and the Johnnies own The Big Apple - at least until Friday. Darling's only points of the game came in the form of a buzzer-beater against Kansas in a 67-65 thriller Sunday. St. John's dominated Kansas but nearly blew it down the stretch. Rick Pitino's team won't have that luxury against No. 1 Duke. The Blue Devils eviscerated TCU 81-58 after a scare against Siena. But Duke still committed 17 turnovers. The Johnnies offer an OG Big East throwback by leading with defense, defense, and more defense. Duke (34-2) advanced to the Sweet 16 for the 29th time since the tournament expanded in 1985. But St. John's is perfectly constructed to exploit Duke's weaknesses. Pitino reaches into his bag of tricks and gets to the Elite Eight. Or at least the cover in our March Madness Picks & Best Bets.

3 Michigan State vs. 2 UConn
9:45 p.m. | CBS
UConn -1.5 (-102)
Michigan State +1.5 (-122)
UConn ML -120
Michigan State ML +100
O/U 137.5

Best Bet: UConn -1.5 (+102 DraftKings vid Odds Jam). To the surprise of absolutely no one, Danny Hurley and Tom Izzo have their teams back in the Sweet 16. The Spartans played just well enough to beat Louisville 77-69 to get here, and, more important, score the 5.5-point cover. MSU is 2-0 ATS in the Tournament. Alex Karaban - who has played in more games than anyone else in this tournament and has two national titles on his resume - carried the Huskies past UCLA Sunday night with 27 points. UConn nabbed an easy cover as 5.5-point overdogs in the 73-57 victory. The Huskies have the edge in depth. But Izzo is Yoda to Hurley's Luke Skywalker. No coach this side of John Wooden gets more from his players. UConn has shot just 26.5% from three in the tournament thus far. Michigan State has shot 21-of-46 from deep (45.6%). The three-point battle will be crucial. Another physical rock fight awaits. The Huskies survive and advance due to the smallest edge in talent and depth. Buckle up for the possibility of an all-Big East regional final.

Midwest Region - Sweet 16

Friday - Chicago

1 Michigan vs 4 Alabama
7:35 p.m. | TBS
Michigan -10.5
Michigan ML -535
Alabama +400
O/U 176.5

Best Bet: Alabama +10.5 (DraftKings via OddsJam). Another Big Ten-SEC Sweet 16 matchup - along with Purdue vs. Texas. Who needs defense? This game carries the highest total of the tournament thus far. The Wolverines averaged 98 points in their first two games in this tournament. But the top-seeded Wolverines have only covered twice in their past 12 games. That's a big-time warning. Michigan passed an early test against Saint Louis in Round 2. Michigan cruised to a 95-72 victory and covered (-12.5), their first cover since the regular season. Yaxel Lendeborg and Aday Mara have Michigan primed for a sweep in the Windy City this weekend. But Alabama can keep the pace. The Tide rolled past Texas Tech 90-65 Sunday. Expect Alabama to keep pace - at least enough to bring this home within single digits.

2 Iowa State vs. 6 Tennessee
10:10 p.m. | TBS

Iowa State -4.5 (-110)
Iowa State ML -218
Tennessee ML +180
O/U 137.5

Best Bet: Under 137.5 Points (DraftKings via OddsJam). Another SEC-Big 12 Sweet 16 matchup - along with Arizona vs. Arkansas. Iowa State owns the best record ATS of any Big 12 team (22-13-1) and has covered in six straight games. That includes the Cyclones' 82-63 rout of Kentucky Sunday. Red hot Tennessee played a nearly flawless first half Sunday to take control against No. 3 Virginia and survived a late flurry for a 79-72 victory. The Volunteers advance to the Sweet 16 for the fourth straight season. This one hinges on the status of All-American Joshua Jefferson. The all-world 6-9 Iowa State star is Iowa State's top rebounder at 7.6 RPG and second-leading scorer at 16.9 PPG. This line suggests Jefferson will be a factor. But with the uncertainty and both teams primed for gritty, physical, low-possession battle, we'll ride the under.

The Iowa State Cyclones reached the Sweet 16 Sunday. (Imagn)

March Madness Picks & Best Bets: What The Sportsbooks Say

Patrick Berbert, College Basketball Trader at Caesars Sportsbook, checked in with Bookies.com before the tournament night. Here's what he had to say.

On Overall Expectations For The Tournament:

We’re expecting a fairly chalky tournament this year, similar to what we saw last season. The NIL era has really widened the gap between the top programs and the rest of the field. From a betting standpoint, we’re projecting record engagement again. College basketball has been a phenomenal product all season, and the television ratings reflect that, as it was reportedly the most-watched regular season ever.” We anticipate SMU/Miami OH, Utah St/Villanova, High Point/Wisconsin, and the winner of NC State/Texas vs BYU to be highly-wagered First Round games.

On Favorites No. 1 Seeds Duke, Michigan, Florida & Arizona,

Duke enters the tournament as the current title favorite at +295. They’ve been dealing with some injuries lately, but they’re expected to get Patrick Ngbonga back, which should give them a boost heading into the tournament. Michigan, meanwhile, cooled off a bit after its scorching start, and the injury to LJ Cason could be significant. Florida had some struggles during non-conference play, but really found its stride in SEC action. With a roster full of experienced players, they’ll be a tough out. Arizona may be the most battle-tested of the group, given the schedule they’ve played and the consistency they’ve shown all season. All four teams have earned their position near the top of the odds board.

Potential Cinderellas This Year

As for potential Cinderella teams, South Florida stands out. First-year head coach Bryan Hodgson, who came over from Arkansas State, has them playing an exciting style. They push the pace, shoot a high volume of threes and rebound well. From a betting perspective, Saint Louis and Miami (OH) are also drawing early attention as possible Cinderella teams that could make a run in the tournament.

Here's what Michael Ranftle, Senior Trader, BetMGM, had to say about his book's liabilities.

Among the favorites, UConn, Florida, and St. John's are our biggest liabilities to win the tournament. Duke and Arizona have been popular with bettors, but are the best outcomes of the title contenders for the sportsbook.
